This is a primary cross betweeh Paph Gardnerii & Paph Rothschildianum 'Red.' I posted photos of the bud several months ago and received replies that it was either Susan Booth or William Amber, based upon the Gardnerii parent.

Well, finally it's in bloom. The photos aren't the greatest, but I'm happy with the plant. :D It's got some deep red coloration, stripes, and twisty/hairy petals going for it. I think I'll keep it. I've had it for several years. It took a while (and lots of patience) to get this one to bloom.

Any ideas as to what it's called?

Thanks for looking!

I'll keep it! Did I mention that this is the first blooming for this plant? I think not. You can definietly see the roth influence with the striping and the deep red coloration. It's interesting, as the 2'nd flower just opened yesterday and the petal stance looks more like the roth stance. The first flower has been open for maybe (?) two weeks now, and you can see how the petals have dropped and have become more wavy.

Was gardineri a variety of another species? Of did it get renamed to glanduliferum? It confuses the heck out of me when a variety becomes its own species and some the the hybrids have to get renamed. Makes me crazy!!

Thanks for your help!

Paph. William Ambler is wilhelminiae x roth and it is a very dark flower. I grew a lot of these and yours doesn't look like them. However, each of the photos is back-lit to at least some degree, which will help the flowers look much more red than they are normally with front only lighting. In your photos, it looks much more like glanduliferum (v. gardinerii, or v. preastans, or v. bodegomii) x roth, all of which are Paph. Susan Booth. In fact, it looks just like a Paph. glanduliferum v. gardinerii x roth. It's very nice. It should have more flowers per stem on future bloomings. If it were mine, I'd keep it too!

Definitely a keeper. Is it really as bright a red as the photo shows?

I think so, but to my eye it's not a bright red, but a more of a 'nutty' deep red. The photos are unedited, so that's what the camera 'saw.' I work part time (seasonal job) for nationally known company that sells outdoor & sporting goods (easy to figure out as I'm in Maine! Think Boots!!) taking orders over the phone. We were instructed to advise internet customers that the colors might show up differently on the web site, as all computers & respective monitors pick up colors differently. The truest colors are in the catalogs. So, to me, it's not 'bright,' just deep & rich.

Here's a shot I took of it perhaps 10 days ago, before the second bloom opened. Again, the photo is not great. I cannot seem to master how to take great photos, but you can get the idea, I hope. You might get a better sense of the color.

Not a William Ambler, I think. At least doesn't look like mine--it is much redder and the pouch is fatter and wider. If I knew how I'd post 2 pictures.
A keeper in any case.
Congrats
