I bought this in June 08. It is tagged as Paph sanderianum 'Jacob's Ladder' x 'Deep Pockets'. The leaf span is 18" and it is a first time bloomer and looks to have 2, maybe 3 buds. As I understand it, there were a few of this cross that did turn out to be sanderianum but the majority were PEoY. It doesn not matter to me which it turns out to be...I am thrilled either way.

Any speculation? :D

Wendy,

That mistake should be well ironed out by now as far as I know (was in the 90s), unles someone else propagated the farce. You'll know soon enough, and, you're right, either one will probably be a keeper. I think that's an OL cross (?) and they have their heads on straight. BTW, sandy has white ovaries (that looks weird in writing), so you'll probably know once the buds extend beyond the bracts. Our PEOYs bloomed with striped ovaries from memory? Keep us posted.

It's kind of an odd time to see sanderianums blooming (which would get me second guessing since my Paph tempation debacle), but Ernie is correct from what I remember too.

JL x DP and DP x JL, as well as another one made by the Orchid Zone - I think it was a DP or a JL times something else, all turned out, without any single exception, to be PEOY.

The few DP x JL that bloomed out to be sanderianum were in fact 'laundered' plants using Orchid Zone invoice, not seed grown ones...

A bit of history, the seeds of those sanderianum apparently came from Norris Powell, who was, apart from a very funny and knowledgeable man, not very strict about reliability to say the least.

The history wants that Terry partner at that time 'made' the cross, but because it failed he got some seed caps from Norris Powell. Ray Rands on his side sold seedlings from the same batch of seeds as something x Kalimantan, there were advertisements at that time in the AOS bulletin. But all those crosses proved to be PEOY. Terry would never have done such a mistake voluntarily...

For fun, DP x JL is still sold here and there to people that are not aware of that history. As far as I know, there has never been any seedlings of DP or JL around.

As for the picture, it could be both PEOY or sand, looks more like a PEOY to me, especially with that bract in the crown, but it is hard to tell exactly. And PEOY can bloom with nearly white ovary, the slight striping coming when the flower is about to open...

Thanks for all the facts guys. I knew the history of the cross when I bought it (cheap) so it was a curiousity purchase. I suspect that it is PEoY but that doesn't matter as I have wanted one forever. There is another PEoY on my bench but it is still a single growth seedling....one in bloom would be a bonus! :D

Bummer. Is that why OZ blooms his plants prior to sale? I have the greatest respect for Terry, he is one of the greats in slipper breeding, and will be getting some of his orchids early next year through Dean!

No, Terry always did that for most of his crosses, now he extended to nearly all of the crosses. A selected plant costs some hundreds US, a blooming size, a couple dozen USD, so he prefers to wait to maximize his gain on each plant, and he is very right at that.
