    Light levels by foot candles

Light levels, as basic as it may seem, is full of potential pitfalls. We get concerned about “what is sufficient,” for example, but rarely think about what is excessive. Despite being told that “more light delivers more blooms”, people forget that in some plants, more light results in short...

    Light levels by foot candles

The AOS guides are reasonably good for the peak, noon FC's plants can handle. For paphs, they say 1000-1500 fc. That would translate to 12 hours of artificial light at 500-750.

    K-Lite-EA

So what’s the big deal? Urea is cheap. Put 1/2 teaspoon in a quart of water to make a 1000 ppm N solution. Add 12.8 ounces of that to a gallon of water to make a 100 ppm N solution and dump the rest down the drain.

You can always make a urea solution then dilute it further to get the concentration down. Look here

    Mold on medium

It’s hard to say from a photo, but it is unlikely to be mold. Did you wash or otherwise pretreat the LECA? During manufacturing, “binders” are added to the raw clay to get it to roll up into little balls and to retain their “green strength” during subsequent handling and firing. Depending...

    K-Lite-EA

Be careful, being it’s a 46-0-0 fertilizer, a little goes a long way and can be easily overdone. 0.82 grams/gallon is a 100 ppm N solution.

    bud blasting last minute

I have never seen a plant blast its buds because of a sudden increase in humidity. A sudden drop, sure, but not an increase. I’d look for another explanation. Is it possible the plant was too dry before you watered?

A while back, I experimented with adding some urea and ended up with a series of rots. Intellectually, I doubt a connection, but I saw what I saw.

    Suitable Mulching material

It is unlikely to be of any biological benefit in a potting mix, but it IS airy!

    Suitable Mulching material

Unfortunately, “normal wet dry cycle of orchid culture” does not mean it matches the normal constantly moist and airy properties of the plants in nature. Many paphs live with their roots spread in that interface where leaf litter (“mulch”) covers the soil below. It may get very wet when it...
