    Charcoal

Whenever I have heard people talk about charcoal "sweetening" the mix it has been in the context of medium acidification so for me the alkaline charcoal makes perfect sense. I think an interesting experiment would be to rinse the charcoal first and then put it in the water and measure what the...

Papiopedilum (primulinum x sanderianum) first blooming.

And a handsome one at that.

Papiopedilum (primulinum x sanderianum) first blooming.

Check out https://www.dustindorton.com/orchids2/plantpages/paph8/paph8.html . I give this zero percent chance of being what the tag says. Sorry for the bad news. I am more inclined to think something Lady Isabelish. It is very pretty.

K-lite and CHC (Coconut Husk Chips)

It is 14% of 100 gram is N, 7% per 100 g is P etc... That is typically how NPK are expressed. The fertilizer must supply actual concentrations on the bottle. It is very unlikely to be a 14% solution , that is, 14 g N per 100 ml. That would mean something like 62 g nitrate per 100 ml.

    philippinense 'Early Riser' 2024

Growing space-stressed people like myself would much prefer breeding for smaller, compact plants with OK petals rather than bigger plants with awesome petals... but I understand you point.

    philippinense 'Early Riser' 2024

Any chance you are going to make a selfing of these?

    Charcoal

Wood ash? This would be any salts present in original wood such as P, K, Mg, CA etc.... But bare in mind that charged organic molecules would also show up as "ppm" if you are using a conductivity meter to estimate tds. So any partially oxidized amino acids etc... Will also leach out and add to...

    philippinense 'Early Riser' 2024

Awesome growing! I am very envious of your skill. Do you have a photo of the whole plant? The plant looks quite compact from what I can see -- which would be cool. Also, do you have any info on the parentage of the cross? Thanks

    Cymbidium Maureen Carter 'Fragrant Princess'

That is very beautiful but how big is it? I grew a Cymbidium sinense many years ago which was a small plant -- and something I could likely grow indoors under lights if need be -- but wasn't much to look at. I would like to know more about the size of these hybrids. Thanks

    complex hybrids

If you grow on the windowsill the plants will definitely experience a temperature drop needed to induce flowering -- if this is even necessary with the modern hybrids. There are a lot of tea-cup complex Paphs out there. Check out https://deerwoodorchids.com/ .

    Lycaste in semi-hydroponics

Hello, As anyone here grown Lycaste in semi-hydroponics? I am in the throws of repotting into lava rock but have a lone Lycaste which I am dubious of repotting into the lava rock as it requires a drier rest for flowering. I suppose an alternative is to instead of potting into a semi-hydro pot...

Question about use of fish emulsion..

You can use it throughout the growing cycle. It is awesome stuff -- but very smelly. If I grew outdoors I would still be using it.

    Calcium loving Paphiopedilums

Pure water would be distilled or demineralized water. Thanks for the info.

I am very impressed by the massive flowers on plants in such so small pots. How do you stop the plants from running wild?

interesting Youtube video: water retention and wicking of different mediums

Hello all, If you have 30 minutes to kill, this is interesting: For those without 30 minutes to kill this is what got my attention. 1. Regardless of the medium over the course of a week all the mediums lost about the same amount of water due to evaporation. This could imply that regardless...

    CO2

Sounds like oyster mushrooms are an easy food fungi to grow for the novice. Yum yum.
  19. TyroneGenade

    CO2

That seems a bit extreme. I new a guy who heated is fishroom for decades with a gas heater. With ventilation this should not be a real risk. I expect many green houses have been heated with gas heaters and the information for proper installation and maintenance exist out there.

    CO2

Mushrooms are a neat idea. For fish tanks I have used yeast and sugar. Fungi just produce co2 from decomposition of cellulose etc... A very good idea.
