    CO2

This is an interesting read: Physiological diversity of orchids It seems some orchids can switch from CAM to other methods of photosynthesis based on water supply. If water needs are met CO2 would become limiting -- assuming all other needs are met. If you want to add CO2 simply run a gas...

    CO2

Terrestrial and emerged plants are not subject to CO2 limitation like submerged aquatic plants. The big issue is water limitation for terrestrial plants. Epiphytic orchids employ Crassulacean Acid Metabolism photosynthesis...

    Chloride???

The chlorine used to chlorinated drinking water is sodium or calcium hypochloride. Some will indeed dissipate as chlorine gas but a lot, because it is so reactive, will become chloride ions. Rain water does have chloride. This is the point of one of the articles I cited and why farmers tried...

    Chloride???

I use K-lite and nutricoat and neither uses chloride based salts in its forumulation. I don't know about others... But I expect all have trace levels of chloride.

    Chloride???

If you are fertilizing, particularly with chlorinated tap water or well water, I doubt there is any deficiency. Even from rain, you can expect 10-35 lb/A of Chloride ion deposition. So using rain water would provide Chloride and certainly our epiphytic orchids would get plenty in nature. Now...

Paphiopedilum villosum var. laichaunum (another one)

How often do you water and do you drench the plants and pots or just a little as needed? Is the pot left to stand in a saucer of water? Thanks

Moving plants in the winter: O MY

If there is wind then wind chill can be a big problem, greatly amplifying the threat of the actual low temperature. Any moisture on the plant could well compound the problems. I like the idea of cardboard boxes. They have good insulating properties and will do the job for short transfers from...

    Slippers in inorganic media

Hello I had good results growing a range of complex Paphs and insigne in crushed brick. The latter did ok without any organic material. The complex paphs had leaf litter mixed into the brick. This also worked with 8-12 mm gravel. I also grew Paph godefroyae and thaianum in crushed brick. I...

    Paphiopedilum Munchkin Jolicomb Jolms

If it clumps like insigne this could make a wonderful display even if the flower itself isn't amazingly eye-catchy. The soft color tones are charming and I could definitely learn to love it. Kudos on your good growing.

    Paph Hengduan Grace Helen

This is the only photo I can find of Grace Darling: Paph. Grace Darling and I struggle to understand what they expected from this cross other than what you see above. Missing the mark seems a bit too generous a description of the outcome. Its sunny disposition does imbue it with some charm and...

    Paphiopedilum barbigerum Tetraploid?

Lovely flower. Very well grown, kudos Leslie. After a few generations of line breeding there is no rational reason to expect the progeny to fall within the normal range of variation of the species. Line breeding is all about emphasizing traits at one end of the normal distribution. As one trait...

Ang thong Masquerade: A Tale of Mistaken Identity

My opinion: I don't think leaf shape is informative. Leaves are display a great phenotypic plasticity -- changing shape, size and color -- with growing conditions. Flower form would be much more diagnostic.

Is this Paphiopedilum helenae x spicerianum (P. Hengduan Sweetheart)?

If the plant has a hengduan origin you should contact them and ask them what they think.

Is this Paphiopedilum helenae x spicerianum (P. Hengduan Sweetheart)?

    This is helenae x insigne: 清酒「月桂冠 ・ 月」 - 蘭とペットと時々 「道楽」 This is the barbigerum cross, Wössner Zwerg : 20124725 - Paph. Wossner Zwerg 'Yakman' HCC/AOS (78 points) 9-15-2012.jpg by the_aos_cjc .

Is this Paphiopedilum helenae x spicerianum (P. Hengduan Sweetheart)?

My first thought was also an insigne cross. I don't see any spicerianum in this. Here is a Sweetheart: Paph. Hengduan Sweetheart (spicerianum x helenae) and looks much like one would expect. I can't see why a primary cross should have so much variation as to produce flowers that look like...
