Found on a brachy x multi hybrid two days ago. Immediately moved away from the rest of my plants. What is it? I sprayed it down with Physan 20 and hoping it doesn’t progress. I’m also considering spraying everything else down with the stuff as a precaution but wanted to get some opinions here...
They’re quite small, single growth plants. 6-8 inch leaf span I think. Larger and less compact looking than some of the other Chou-Yi Rookie I’ve seen online. I have a three growth, unbloomed plant that I’m watching intently. How are yours doing?
I noticed the darker sibling had normal looking pollinia, so if the pollen from the first and second flower of the lighter sibling don’t work out I have a backup. We’ll see in about a week if the second flower forms a normal looking pollinia!
Here’s a closeup of the weird pollinia. It was large and chunky. Not sure if it’s viable, but I pollinated another flower with it. If it fails hopefully the second flower produces better formed pollen and I can try again 🙂
Two of my rothschildianum x thaianum from Sam are starting to open up. These are first blooms for both plants so I was expecting some funky flowers, but strangely enough one of them seems to have misshapen pollinia that also lack the “cap” I’ve seen on others. Can anyone here weigh in on this...
Thanks! I sprayed it down with some diluted hydrogen peroxide and it seems to have helped the areas I sprayed. If it fails to work I’ll look into the methods you suggested. The probiotics seem interesting.
What are signs to look out for successful pollination? I’ve read of flowers falling off and leaving behind the ovary; I’ve also heard of checking to see if the pollinia is “stuck” indicating that the pollen tubes have grown into the pod parent. Are these things true, and if so what is the time...
Seeing the larger greenhouse with the smaller one inside reminds me of when one repots a plant without removing the old pot, simply placing the whole thing in a larger one. 😂
I had a multifloral Paph hybrid arrive last week. It was in transit for about 6 days, so I’m worried about. It had one large leaf on its oldest growth brown, so I cut it off, however now an old leaf on its flowering growth is browning too.
The other leaf tips of this flowering growth are...
The Seek app identified this spider as Metacyrba taeniola. Found this little guy in my collection. Seems to have made a couple threads of web, and he’s just hanging out on the leaf. Are spiders useful as biological control over pests? I don’t mind him being here unless it would harm the plant.
The flower has had some time to open up more. However, with the plant having arrived with an already yellowing leaf, I’m worried about letting it keep its bloom. Will it be alright holding onto it, or would it be advisable to snip the flower and let the plant save its energy?
Is my Eumelia Arias putting out a bud? The growth emerging from the crown has some light striations on its sides and when viewed from the top, doesn’t look “creased” like new leaves do.
I recently repotted this Fritz Schomburg in a mix of Orchiata bark, charcoal, and perlite. Noticed this mold taking hold at the surface and tried removing the fuzzy pieces, but it came back. How should I treat this, and is it harmful to the plant?
