    Phrag Pulchellum

Sue was a fine long-standing grower with a special interest in phrags. But last year she decided she had to sell off her collection. I learnt of this via Malcolm Perry.

    Phrag Pulchellum

Not fully able to follow all of what Rob says on the topic. Very confusing indeed. So what should be said of this one now?

    Phrag Pulchellum

Not the prettiest fellow, but interesting as it is one of the earliest phrag crosses. The parents are Grande x Sedenii and it was registered in 1893 by Vanner. I bought this last year from Sue Adams in Bristol.

Thank you Eliseo. Not easy is it with these white blooms...

    Five Besseae in bloom

Took a good bit of wriggling them all into good positions.:)

    Five Besseae in bloom

Correct. I have found that the phrags I sit in water don't do as well as those which don't. Not sure why. But that's my experience.

    Five Besseae in bloom

I'm up in southern Scotland, so my light levels will be worse than yours. I would bet its the watering schedule. Unless its one of the really long-petalled species, I would begin watering daily and heavily. Certainly all the short petalled phrags I have known all love as much water as I can give...

    Five Besseae in bloom

The one on the upper right is my favourite, and to my eye has none of the hallmarks of dalessandroi. And the one in the lower left is besseae 'Icarus' (3N) which I bought about 8 years back from Orchids Limited in Minnesota.

    Five Besseae in bloom

They're in bark, not repotted often, and I water them heavily every day. I grow them both cool and warm, they seem happy in both halves of my greenhouse. I've begun using those Jobes fertiliser sticks in the past year, as other feeding is difficult with my setup. Oh, and there's LOTS of...

    Five Besseae in bloom

Never had 5 besseae in bloom at the same time before. Ok, one is a D'allesandroi, but even so, I thought it worth taking the trouble to shoot a group portrait this morning.

    Impressive parents!

Phrag. Fox Valley Fireball 'Cinnamon Fire' AM/AOS

What is the cross parentage please? (Your website makes no mention of that...)

    Phragmipedium Memoria Garren Weaver

I really like this cross too, one of the best of the long-petalled ones to my mind. The character is more pronounced, which I like to see.

The name sounds familiar, I'm sure it was Glenn that sold me the plant. He didn't have more than a few, and was very pleased he had these..! Glad I made so obvious a tag / ID at the time, so I would not be able to forget.

    Mexipedium xerophyticum

Ok, all I had to do was look at the other side of the tag, to see when and where I bought this. Duhh..! Anyone know if New World Orchids is still around? I bought this plant from the fellow at the Newbury Orchid Show in 2002, but I believe he was based in Florida.

I just kept feeling I wasn't giving it what it wanted. Last year's comments here were a huge help. It simply wanted more water..!

    Mexipedium xerophyticum

I'll see if I have anything in my records to remind me. (I used to be better at recording where each plant came from...)

    Mexipedium xerophyticum

Good point..! Yes, this one has pretty short 'cabling'. You make me appreciate it all the more..! :)

    manzurii x richteri

Great registration name, like the idea of celebrating and commemorating that!

    Mexipedium xerophyticum

    It is a 6" pot.
