Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

Oh my gosh thank you! I’m still without words about this!!!! Sasha, is this you? I’m totally in shock over how well this plant did. I’m heading over to Victoria on the 9:00 ferry tomorrow so if you’re back at the show I’ll hopefully see you there 😊

    Bulbophyllum medusae

    It's an oblong bonsai dish. 8.5" x 7".

    Bulbophyllum medusae

It might take a while to get established. Mine did but once it was happy it grew quite steadily. I grow it in a shallow dish with a bottom layer of fine bark/perlite and a thick top layer of sphagnum moss. Other people grow theirs on mounts but I don't seem to have much luck with that method...

Lol, too bad you're not going to be in Victoria this weekend!

    Bulbophyllum medusae

I grow it at the end of the top shelf of a light stand and it gets supplemental light from a skylight above the room. Depending on the time of year it'll receive some morning and late afternoon sun from the skylight, but it never gets the hot midday sun.

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

I have the spike really well staked and lots of bubble wrap around the pot so that it won't hit the other plants in the box. The petals still bounce but they shouldn't get torn on anything. The box also has really tall sides to protect the plant from anything getting too close to it. I thought...

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

I hear you! Some years ago I took my sanderianum to Victoria for judging. It involved lots of driving and a ferry ride. It took me ages to pack that plant securely but it made it there just fine. Then during judging one of the judges accidentally tore off a petal!!!!!

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

Thank you. I hope she travels alright and doesn't get any more curls snipped off. She's well packed and surrounded by lots of bubble wrap and I warned our show set up lady that her petals are more delicate than they look so I guess I've done about as much as I can do. I plan to pop over to the...

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

Thank you, that's very encouraging. It's a first bloom seedling with a 28" leaf span so I hope it'll at least do well in that category. I guess it depends on how many other plants are entered. Fun, fun!

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

Here are the flowers fully open now except for the sixth one at the top. I'll be packing it up tomorrow to send it over to Vancouver Island for the show on the weekend. The torn petal doesn't stand out like a sore thumb now that the rest of the flowers are in bloom so we'll see what the ribbon...

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

Lol, she had a bad hair day thanks to her clumsy mama! The other buds are opening nicely and their long curly petals are quite eye catching. The torn one isn't so noticeable now.

Update: Please help! I'm such a klutz!!

That's a great explanation. I like ribbon judging too and have participated in a ribbon judging team at a few shows. It's a fun way to see what's in the show. I've also been the "runner" for the AOS judging team so have seen and heard that part of the judging system. I like to volunteer for that...

    Bulbophyllum medusae

I've had this bulbo for seven years and it usually just puts out one or two flowers each year. This year I'm happy to see five flowers all blooming at the same time. I grow it in a shallow bonsai pot with a layer of fine bark on the bottom and a layer of sphagnum moss on top. The blooms have a...
