    Wanted Good Phrag. besseae

I picked up several flasks of Phrag besseae ‘Mega’ x ‘Zephyrus Mega’ every single one of them that have bloomed have been a disappointment. Only have maybe 25 left to flower but not expecting anything spectacular. That said, if you see Mega x Z Mega, expect to be underwhelmed.

    Piping Rock new owner

This makes me think, is the industry starting to fall apart? I have been doing this since the early 1980’s and saw the rise and fall of many large-scale nurseries. My first job outside of my family business was for an orchid retailer in Cupertino California who dealt strictly with only plants...

Another round of guess the spike

    Tony = drama in spades.

    Cyrt edwardii

The plant is relatively large from what I have seen in other collections. Four mature bulbs and roughly one meter cubed. The spike is roughly 1.75 meters. It is treated just like my cooler growing Odonts but kept slightly more moist by adding sphagnum moss to the mix. Fertilized heavily. Strong...

    Cyrt edwardii

Leslie, I was on the same judging team as Howard for POE this spring and it was fun to bend his ear. He told me that his GH has one very tall side to accommodate the spiking habit of his plants. Sadly I doubt there will ever be a commercially viable long spike Cyrt but perhaps with the mini’s...

    Cyrt edwardii

Thanks Leslie, I actually listened to you talk driving from Sacramento to the Bay Area last night. It sure would be nice to figure out how to tame some of the Cyrtochilum. I love them bit damn they can be a real pain with their rhizomes and lengthy spikes. Recently picked up some “dwarf”...

    Cyrt edwardii

I love Paphs and Phrags but also grow a significant amount of Odonts, Cytrochilum and Oncidiums in my greenhouse. Cyrt edwardii has been one of those species that I always loved. After seeing one on a trip to Ecuador with Lil Severin and a who’s who of the orchid world back in the early 90’s, I...

Central PA Orchid Society Show - March 25-26

I will vouch for the legitimacy of those plants being 100% captive produced. Tony has really gone out of his way to source plants and propagate them now into multiple generations. Tyler

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

This is a very interesting thread. I too am in the judging system (on 3rd year) and can sympathize with your frustrations. Many of the issues that you have are the same issues here and at all the other JC’s. There are cliques, bad players, “good old boys clubs”, but also so great folks who are...

Anyone have or know of anyone with Phrag klotzschianum available? TIA Tyler

    Dracula vampira ‘Zorba’ AM/AOS

I have all the Draculas on “the cool end” of my greenhouse where the swamp cooler is and also have heavy misters there as well. The misters go off once a day in the summer and in the winter they are turned off. Dracs just get watered once a week in winter, 2x in summer. Same ferts as all the...

Zorba has been a reliable bloomer for me were others have been more reluctant. Always a pleasure when the big Draculas bloom. Tyler

Wanted Cal West Tropical Supply = Flori Culture?

Heather, yes I’m still in Loomis. If you need stuff just call Flori-Culture. Johnathan is usually there and like Tom said he has times when walk-ins are welcome. I always call first though to see if its ok to stop by. Tyler

    Phrag besseae….too bad

Its small and color break in the pouch. The temps in the GH have been all over the place this fall and winter so issues like this are no real surprise.
