    Cattleya labiata coerulea ‘Anja’

That is no where close to the winter conditions of these species in the wild. No surprise that they are growing differently, but maybe a surprise that they may be growing better. The traditional northern latitude greenhouses did not have artificial lighting. Today they may or may not. The plants...

    Cattleya labiata coerulea ‘Anja’

Here are the temperature (F) and rainfall (inch) variations during the year in the natural habitats of lueddemanniana and labiata, as reported on the Baker culture sheets. They are substantially different, but each may grow and flower better under other conditions. I don't know what would happen...

    Cattleya labiata coerulea ‘Anja’

You know you have my interest as I travel back from trying to mimic the natural habitat! You did change your lighting a bit for winter, didn't you? Are you changing your water/feeding much during the seasons? Are some of your species (like labiata) blooming more frequently than once yearly? I am...

Cattleya trianaei 'Cashen's' FCC/AOS is blooming

The natural horizontal spread of the FCC/AOS plant was 15.5 cm

Seasonal changes for Cattleya growing conditions

That road says that some seasonal variation in day length, light intensity, temperature, water, and nutrition is probably necessary to trigger growth and blooming in some/most/all species BUT, they may not need to be as extreme as occur in the natural habitat.

Cattleya trianae (penta) flamea ‘Sorpresa’ AM/AOS

It’s hard to believe it’s a species. What over a century of breeding can do, especially when polyploids get involved.

Seasonal changes for Cattleya growing conditions

Leslie, are you saying give longer hours and higher intensity light than in situ?

Seasonal changes for Cattleya growing conditions

You both are supporting that mimicking in situ conditions may not be right for our current plants.

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

Are either ‘White Empress’ or ‘Broomhills’ still in existence?

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

Maybe a bad painting? I have read that some Bow Bells were tetraploid and some were diploid. I guess we can’t tell whether Suzanne Hye or the Edithiae was polyploid in the original cross. I don’t think they could have both been diploid and then a number of spontaneous tetraploid Bow Bells came...

Seasonal changes for Cattleya growing conditions

Mixing metaphors, during the last year, I went down the rabbit hole and into the weeds with the issue of seasonal changes in growing conditions for Cattleyas. I purchased the Baker culture sheets for my thirteen unifoliate Cattleya species because they were the most detailed information I could...

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

Thank, Patrick. Great to have access to that older information. The early days of hybridizing were wild with poor record keeping everywhere, from what I read. The early spontaneous tetraploids radically transformed the breeding.

Cattleya lueddemanniana aquinii labio solido x self

OK, David, you know that I need specifics on all of these color forms. Define “aquinii” and “labio solido”

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

It’s supposed to be but I probably won’t know for a couple of years at this rate.

Cattleya trianaei 'Cashen's' FCC/AOS is blooming

And even many of the awarded trianae plants only have two flowers on each inflorescence so don't feel bad about one flower!

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

I have one. It has been growing slowly.

    C. Nancy Off '1290'

While Nancy Off does not have Bow Bells in its background, it still owes its success to the real star, Suzanne Hye. Bow Bells was 75% Suzanne Hye, while Nancy Off is 34% Suzanne Hye. I have a Waldors mericlone of an almost-white heritage RLC. Pastoral ‘Innocence” FCC/AOS (registered in 1961)...

    They look tetraploid!

Blc. Hilo Grand ‘Waldor’s 100 Grand’ Original Division

I think you will grow it very well in your conditions and it might bloom better and at a better time for your shows next year.

Cattleya lueddemanniana rubra ‘Sarita’, a good blooming.

David, it is very dark. I think you have a mossiae ‘Willowbrook’? Is ‘Sarita’ as dark or darker? This must be as dark a ‘rubra’ lueddemanniana as exists.
