    Paphiopedilum Fajen’s Fiesta

All the ones I've bloomed have been pretty good! Nice one

    Free-flowering Paphs?

When I first started growing (40ish years ago), I was told outright by a very good breeder of paphs (probably not who you are thinking of, a generation before him) that the secret was breed the fastest growing plants and sell the rest. Breed with the best of the first 10 or so plants to flower...

    Paphiopedilum QF Ki'owaiokihawaine

I don't know, there are some pretty hard to pronounce names from other languages out there... That is definitely one to use the printer for making labels. :) To be honest I've never liked vietnamense or most of its hybrids. For me the flowers have worse form and last a fraction of the time...

Why are there not more Complex Paph crossed with Rothschildianum or Sanderianum?

I'm certainly not in it for the wealth... Pretty much works the opposite way, :)

Why are there not more Complex Paph crossed with Rothschildianum or Sanderianum?

Actually there are lots of crosses, just not lots of plants. Takes forever to bloom them, a high percentage of seedlings never bloom, and sometimes you get maybe half a dozen plants out of cross, if you get them at all... No reason not to try. But you won't see them for sale very much. I'm...

    Flower shape impovement

That used to be the case with harlequin phals, as well. I wonder if those are linked somehow. Phal breeders managed to get rid of most of the shape problems, maybe it is just a several generation project.

    Vendor for semi-hydropoic pots?

Interesting that you ask. I have a large quantity taking up space in my barn...nice heavy plastic. Got mine from first Ray's many many years ago, he probably still sells some? Anyway, if you are close to Lansing MI, come get them cheap. I'm not shipping pots, I don't even have time to ship...

    Wanted Phrag. longifoum album

I potted 16 into 2.25" pots today... Only two catches - first is that they were definitely not the paph that the flask ID said it was. I could tell that in flask. The only phrag that matches even close to the sowing date in Sam's stud books is longifolium album. They look like it... So...

    Repotting every year?

Depends on how you repot... I try to repot smaller plants every year, bigger plants every few years. Probably also depends on how consistent you are with your potting mix, moving to a new mix every year is probably not the world's best plan. Depends on what type of orchid you are repotting...

    Paph. kolopakingii album

I know a lot of college graduates who can't count... :) Had 40 flasks of this last fall. Might be a while before I see them bloom

    * sigh *

Actually I think you can register it anyway, photos are optional. For complex hybrids at least. I've had to register a few oddball hybrids just to get awards processed. Sometimes you get plants with nested brackets (X x Y) x (W x {Z x N}) is a problem I've faced before, the AOS doesn't seem...

    Wanted Phragmipediums that bloom often?

I've grown sorcerer's apprentice in aquaponics... Airstone in the bottom of a 3 gallon bucket. Regular hydroponic fertilizer (made for tomatoes maybe). It never stopped being in bud or bloom, lasted maybe 18 months before I got tired of how big it was getting and moved it back to 'regular'...

    Paph St. Swithin dividing question

Best bet is to judge based on the leaf color. If very dark green, more light will get you better growth (probably). If already a lighter green, you might actually get better growth if you dial back the light a bit. It sounds crazy, I know. Some people can push them really hard with a lot of...

    Paph St. Swithin dividing question

These are two St. Swithin that I grabbed at random. Left is in a 6" pot with 5 or 6 mature growths and several starts. From someone here on ST a few years ago. Right is in an eight inch pot with a few more growths. Why the picture? Just to show that a ten inch pot would be a monster. I...

    Paph St. Swithin dividing question

I would not divide down to single growths unless the plant did it for me.

    Sangii x barbatum

I assume Quintal made these? Got a bunch from them. This is the first to bloom out (in my display). A little wonky in a few parts, but the violet color I like

    Donna's Bird x hainanense

This is a cross I made. Haven't named it yet (someone might have snuck one in). I really like this particular one

    Wanted Paph King Arthur

I used to have lots of it... King Arthur 'Burgogne' (or some proper spelling of that). If nobody else can find it I might have one left. But probably can't find it until I start taking plants outside in the spring. It is kind of weedy....
