    Phrag Fritz Schomburg

T That is a great cross. I pined over it when it came out but I was sure I’d kill it at that point in my growing, so passed. The best Fritz I’ve seen.

    These are thrips, aren't they.

Beth I just got a shipment of Rega virus tests if you need some, at my cost.

    These are thrips, aren't they.

Here is the link. I just revisited it and am glad I did. I'd forgotten a lot of the details. https://secure.aos.org/digital-library/202301orch_92-1/30/index.html#zoom=z

    These are thrips, aren't they.

It could be a virus color break. Streaks are not unusual. Hard to see in the photo, but if thrips chewed the bud, the petals could become watermarked (somewhat translucent) which might affect the color of the developing pouch. Or as you say, an anomaly. I’ve only seen anomalies in sepals on one...

    Led grow lights tripod

I have a PAR meter that measures LEDs accurately. Just checked. That table has plants measuring 250-350 PAR depending on where on the table they are. Highest are near center and +- 20” top of canopy below lights. Others are +- 24-30”. I didn’t need this many tubes and could have fewer with...

    Led grow lights tripod

I use 5,000 k 4’ tubes 42w each. My high light cattleyas grow and bloom well (even digbyana) under 3 tubes 24” -30” above canopy. Other catts under 2 tubes, phals, milts, Paphs unde r1.

    These are thrips, aren't they.

Thrips can spread viruses that cause color break which is why it’s so important to be on top of them. Sue’s article says what can appear to be color break can be caused by them and shows an example on buds, but I think you would see other damage as well...

    These are thrips, aren't they.

That color break is not something I've ever seen with thrips. Thrips usually dry the flowers around the edges or create dry spots. That is color break. Although in rare cases it could be an anomaly, I'd check for viruses.

Istvan, come to the Paph Forum in DC with it Feb 8 & 9! You can enter it in the ‘Ugliest Paph’ Category 😂😂😂 Just kidding!! It’s not ugly, but it sure is unusual! It definitely would get a lot of attention!! If it blooms like that consistently, you may start a new direction in breeding!

    Paph. Black Diamond

Is it a bit challenging to grow? I have Blsck Diamond ‘Jazz Singer’ from Hadley. I killed the first one and have slowly managed to keep a small piece that broke off alive and it’s finally growing. Would love to get it to blooming size.

You might cool the leaves too much as the excess alcohol evaporates, Especially on finer leaved plants.

    your oldest orchids

Grew phals on windowsills for 20 years, none of those left. Many were virused and the others not special enough to keep in my limited growing space (9 x 12 climate controlled grow room under LEDs). In 2014 I bought my first cattleya Dinard ‘Blue Heaven’. Huge, with 15 flowers on 5...

    Aircone pots

You can soak plastic in bleach, but just soaking clay won’t kill the viruses as they are porous. So that requires baking clay at 400 degrees for 2+ hours. Some soak clay first then bake. I do soak some things but grow under lights in my basement so dealing with Clorox is not worth it for pots...

    Aircone pots

I used them for a few years—liked them for some things but found cattleyas instead of the roots growing around in circles above the rim, grew down the sides in the corners! In the larger pots if I had trouble getting a plant out (even after soaking), the pots were very hard to cut off (it took...
