    Phragmipedium Jerry Lee Fischer

Probably looking to add genetics to support multiple flowers on an inflorescence, and make it less demanding in general. Phrag. longifolium grows like a proverbial weed.

    Wanted WANTED: Paphiopedilum Startler Glace

I remember what I paid in the early 90s for some of Andy Easton's newest hybrids, and would love to have that money now. Or what I paid for Cym. Balkis 'Silver Orb' in the 60s. At the height of the Southern California Cymbidium boom prices for top plants soared. I had planned to breed these...

    Wanted WANTED: Paphiopedilum Startler Glace

So many of these clones are expensive because of their breeding potential. If you are not a commercial breeder, the price makes them out of range for most of us.

    Wanted WANTED: Paphiopedilum Startler Glace

The world of expensive orchids is paved with heartbreak. These days I stick with far less expensive fare. Not to say that temptation doesn’t walk sometimes.

    Organic fertilizers???

I used various rock dusts for many years, growing cut flowers, vegetables and small fruits commercially and with organic certification. These are slow acting, long term materials that can improve soils lacking or deficient in various minerals. It makes no sense at all for me for epiphytes.

    Paph Spicy Henry 'Elk #1'

I'm posting this a couple of days before it is fully open, because we are headed into a dark and stormy next week or so, which means the light will not be good for further photos for a bit. I love this little one. Easy to grow in our cool conditions, grows into clumps, multiple flowers on a...

    Paph. delenatii question

Something to remember is that most epiphytic orchids grow so slowly that patience is needed - along with careful observation and measurement, to really know whether a particular cultural practice is having a positive effect. In many cases there are so many environmental and cultural variables...

    Anticipation

This might be the last picture of this one. The first flower is fading, and with these short winter days I don't know if the third flower will make it. Sure has been fun!

    Fungus Knats vs Mosquito Bits

I've found that three applications spaced 5 to 7 days apart does a very complete job. An aside: I work to grow moss on the top of the media for all of my Phrags, Disas and other water loving types. Once I have 100% coverage: I have zero issues with Fungus gnats.

    Anticipation

The color is still developing as the second flower is opening. It must be liking the sun after a week plus of solid rain and darkness.

    Phrag Yelva Myhre progeny question

With Cymbidiums there has been some success doing meristem tissue culture of triploids and converting to hexaploids. These are sometimes very productive and sometimes fertile.

    Phrag Yelva Myhre progeny question

Oh, joy. A lumber and splitter opportunity. Phrag. kaieteurum is, according to the person I trust on this, Frank Cervera, really just another inappropriate name for Phrag. lindleyanum. That makes this hybrid Peruvian Fire, which as far as I can see has no progeny. The splitting of...

Beautiful. Worth the effort by my measure. But I didn't have to jump through the hoops.

    Phrag QF 'Io

A sister to one I posted last month. Couldn't be more different. Starts reddish, not creamy yellow and is on a very tall spike. The 50% longiflorum is strong with this one. Much smaller flower as well.
