Paph. Crouching Tiger: double spike watch

Definitely going to be needing a repot next spring. It is very tippy with all the leaf weight and now long spikes.

Paph. Crouching Tiger: double spike watch

I am keeping the humidity between 70 and 80 percent to increase the chances of long petals on this first blooming!

Paph. Crouching Tiger: double spike watch

Here she is today…I am struggling to keep the two spikes separated enough for both sets of blooms to open.

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

That sounds good! Dry is definitely better than soggy! For what it is worth, I do think the larger the pot, the better the dormant bulbs overwinter, too.

    Wow! Very cool!

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

My outdoor garden in Zone 8b (Seattle area) and I would second the “box with insulating materials stuffing around it” idea. Ive lost some expensive tender bulbs to slightly below freezing temps when I just left the pots sitting up against the foundation…also by trying to use an outdoor heat...

Nifty timelapse of several paphs opening/spikes elongating

Here’s my Paph Julius and Paph Astonishing Lady opening; Paph Crouching Tiger is in the background and its spikes can be seen stretching. Kinda cool! Hope you enjoy it, too. I had to break the video into two roughly 10 sec long pieces, so vid 2 starts right as Vid 1 ends.

    Paphiopedilum Julius (

I am really happy with the color on this Julius. It has definitely inherited the broad flower span from its roth parent (9 1/8” on the first bloom to open). It is really tall; I removed it from my 36” tall orchidarium this morning as the last bloom was getting cramped on the ceiling.

    My best paphiopedilums

All of them are so lovely… The deperla is really special… And that zapatilla is gorgeous!

Paph. Crouching Tiger: double spike watch

My Crouching Tiger has two spikes this winter, both about 27” tall right now (measured straight up from the surface the pot is sitting on)…crossing my fingers they continue to develop!
