    AQ update when??

The new AQ+ and judging entry system is almost ready to come on line, it's pretty much a transition to the next and hopefully improved version. It will include updates that are downloaded whenever you want, daily, monthly, yearly or whatever. When the bills are paid, the award will be available.

    Arbitrary Rules

Just to clarify a point about AOS judging and these "illegal" species. There have been some awards to Paph hangianum hybrids in Canada and Taiwan by AOS judging. About a year ago, it was determined by the Judging Committee that the rules should be equally applied and that American legality...

    Norman's Orchids

He has had a bit of problem with mealybug, but is diligently taking care of the situation. He does have some very nice paphs with a Taiwanese origin as well as a full range of phals, catts, etc.

Phrag Jason Fischer 'True Blood' second blooming

My plants started to branch when they had around 4-5 growths. Larger plants almost always branch.

Difference between regular and album leaves (espcially venustum)

The true measuresianum has no anthocyanin expression so only shows the base colors of yellow, green and white.

    Paph armeniacum

I have found this true also, and have grown several plants of both species. If you put a blindfold on, you could easily discern which is which.

    Paph. Raisin Jack x Gloriosum

The callosum 'Jac' background also shows up in this flower, contributing to the spotting on the petals.

Masd. Golden Spade 'Red Heart' AM/AOS

LOL, this clone is supposed to be red. I imagine that it is due to warm temperatures..........

Masd. Golden Spade 'Red Heart' AM/AOS

Okay, that explains the color also......It's amazing that you can grow this in Singapore!

Masd. Golden Spade 'Red Heart' AM/AOS

I would hope that it bloomed better for the award. Considering it is 1/2 welischii and 1/4 veitchiana it should have less of a pinched dorsal.

    Paph. Maudiae 'Los Osos' AM/AOS

This is certainly 'Los Osos' and is still one of the best coloratum Maudiaes available. It is in the background of a lot of hybrid crosses and contributes size, vigor and color to the progeny. Flowering with all plants is a reflection of climate, quality of care and serendipity. That being said...

    Phrag Magdalene Rose 4N

Chuck, I grew a flask of this cross (also from Acker) and found it quite a vigorous and nice hybrid with the prominent teeth being the problem. Some clones are quite dentate on the margins and others are more moderate. Obviously this is a ploidy issue from the Eric Young parent. It also seems...

    Paphiopedilum ID (Help needed)

This is a very tortured and taxonomically difficult group of species. Over time, small differences in the flower usually based on staminode shapes have created some different names. Add in the names that importers such as Rands placed on these things and even more confusion reigns. My guess...

Paph. Tokyo Knight Dream 'Ice Palace' AM/AOS

That is a very excellent white!

    Phrag. kovachii x Prissy

My guess is that the white base color of kovachii trumps the yellow base color of besseae to create pink flowers, much like schlimii and fischeri.

Phrag ((kovachii x dalessandroi) x schlimii)

Just to join in the kovachii hybridizing conversation; It seems apparent that it has some well defined strengths and weaknesses as a parent. Positive: size of flower, a short rhizome (especially compared to besseae), hybrids are easy to grow and bloom. Negative: waffling of the flower as...

Phrag ((kovachii x dalessandroi) x schlimii)

The first picture looks like Phrag Cape Sunset, 2nd looks like Don Wimber and the third is Memoria Dick Clements

    charlesworthii

If that is true, then people need to explain that to commercial nurseries that create flat, big and brightly colored. Despite what many say, when it comes down to purchasing such a plant, they will always go for the bigger and better one.

    charlesworthii

All of this is quite subjective, depending on your vision of what the species should represent. Selective breeding gives us flowers that are larger, more richly colored, have larger segments that are flatter. Why it should be preferred in charlesworthii more than spicerianum is nothing more than...
