Should I self the kovachii I just got awarded?

Use the pollen but don't stress the plant. It is a small first bloom seedling and putting a pod on it might just sap too much energy.

    Phrag Kovachii awarded

I agree that the judges got a bit excited, in fact very excited but this was a small first bloom seedling so a cultural award was out of question. My guess is that this will seem quite typical as a seedling, but all of them are spectacular. With a small reference point, this is a likely result.

    Any Guesses? victoria regina?glaucophyllum?

There have been a lot of these hybridized in the past as species but actually being hybrids. Some plants labeled chamberlainianum, glaucophyllum, etc were assumed by the breeder to be the same.....and the mistake is perpetuated.

Sc. Beaufort 'Harfords Elmwood' 4N Am/AOS

I believe it is a normal colored coccinea. The progeny ranged from bright orange to pure yellow with various combinations. The yellow ones seem to be most common.

Well done, it is a very well balanced flower showing the best of both parents.

    phrag Noirmont 4N

It does have minimal notching on the petals, that a good thing with the 4N hybrids.

    Phrag tetzlaffianum

I agree that there are some questions about the project, but the tagged article is so deliberately political that it has to be discounted.

    Taipei Scarlet O’Hara

Perhaps.....it just magnifies the washed out color. Some plants of Phrag Jason Fischer show dark purplish shades on the margins, so maybe it's just a gradation of how the color manifests according to temperature.
  19. S

    Taipei Scarlet O’Hara

The color is defined by the temperatures it endures while the flower is maturing. Often flowers on the same inflorescence will appear different colors when temperatures are hotter or cooler over a few weeks. The best reds show up in cool temperatures, my best flowers are in the winter when it...

Rick, That is terrible, and in South Texas where rain is usually pretty plentiful. I imagine it has cut down insects, snakes and spiders.......Hopefully it gets better, but you have some major problems with your house. Those trees are tall enough to cause trouble too..........hang in there.
