are those pots with "open"bottoms? Just a cross of plastic to hold in the potting material? I have had some of those I got from grafted japnese maples i bought, maybe what you have is a repurposed grafting pot.

I read there are so many hundreds of chihuahuas in California shelters, they are shipping them east where they are rarer. What a shame, the origional owner didn't have it fixed and find it a good home....

maybe she is on to something....keeping the roots up keeps them from rotting.....after all, I think I have seen some phals strapped to tree fern slabs and their roots can grow up as well as down.
