    Paphiopedilum Magic Lantern

I have already said it above. The only exception to this was Ho Chi Minh at a few days. All parvis, species and hybrids, I have had had about the same bloom life span. The only outlier is one of my Norito Hasegawa (also last about 3-4weeks normally) that lasts for about 3 months in bloom.

    Paphiopedilum Magic Lantern

Magic Lantern last 3-4 weeks, typical of parvis in general. At least that's my experience.

    Disease, pest, Virus? Problem ID

Home test kits only test for two. CymMV and ORSV. Any university level or commercial labs dealing with plants should be able to test for all kinds of plant diseases. Search on this website or google for orchid virus testing lab. I can't remember the names but there were at least two common ones...

    Ludisia discolor

It appears to be in peat based potting mix with small perlite bits tossed in. You grow yours in lava rock?? I guess it works as long as the roots stay moist. I always see them sold in the peat based mix. At least when I buy them from florist. never bought them from orchid nurseries. I have only...

    Paphiopedilum Magic Lantern

What would be expected of selfing of a primary hybrid?

    Dendrobium Johnnie

Short lived is the main flaw. I like these also!

Good Year for Micranthum & Armeniacum, Finally Paphiopedilum armeniacum in bud

No. We all have seen that giant hanging ball of armeniacum shooting out from all angles. That is not what I want.

    Disease, pest, Virus? Problem ID

The second photo and the last three photos are typical symptoms of CaCV(Capsicum Chlorosis Virus) and it is likely that it has other virus infecting the plant also. It is very common disease for Phalaenopsis, unfortunately.

Good Year for Micranthum & Armeniacum, Finally Paphiopedilum armeniacum in bud

Anything goes, but I prefer not to have stolons shooting out all over the place. That's main reason why I don't like the basket. Plus, anything hanging gives me anxiety almost. lol The examples I mentioned in the above comment are basically mesh pot but with holes small enough so that the...

    Ludisia discolor

What I love about German grocery stores. Finding jewel orchids with multiple spikes that come with a nice deco pot for only 5.99!! I almost bought the entire tray but did not want to be greedy. 😂 That was last week of October and the flowers started to open mid November. Still in bloom. I had...

A Couple of parvis in Bloom & Bud

For those size queens, both flowers are over 4inch ns. The yellow one is just teeny weeny bit over 4, and the pink one is well over 4inch. It's like almost as big as the plant itself. Love it!! :)

    vietnamense

The strangely full and round petals are what leaves me wonder about its true identity. It just screams HCM somewhere in it. It is very pretty, though!

    Vietnamense in situ ?

I have the book and there's one the painting of the species as the front cover, which is beautiful. And there's only a photo of a small seedling in situ inside the book. I understand that the species were already "cleaned out" from much of the habitat shortly after its discovery in the 90s. I...

    Paphiopedilum venustum

Nice close ups!! I should get myself venustum. I love their wild patterned leaves also! :)

A Couple of parvis in Bloom & Bud

Yeah, I'm happy with it. I was not expecting much as my impression of the species had been that 'difficult-to-grow and bloom diva, why bother?' plus droopy petals that doesn't do me much. HCM has always been my much preferred alternative. Easy to find (not anymore here in Europe!) and easy to...

    Paph. delenatii question

It seems like it has more to do with genetics. Some would add one new growth at a time while others would add three or more new growths at a time, then move up fast from there. Other faster Paphs like those in the section Paphiopedilum were the same for me. The bulldog hybrids I had were...

    Catasetums & Cycnoches 2024

Sounds very interesting! I have seen some lucis hybrids and it should indeed be a surprise. I hope it will be a happy surprise for you! :)

    Catasetums & Cycnoches 2024

This cooperi is from the same grex as yours. I bought a few at the time. Some turned out reddish orange brown like yours. I only kept two darker brown ones, then eventually just this dark chocolate one. I think there was 21 or 22 flowers. During the day it had mild yet pleasant scent.

    Small blooming growths

I let my plants do their thing. Never had problems that way. They will bloom when they want. Many species are highly seasonal even under artificial environments and bloom at certain time of the year. If for whatever reason the growth did not have enough time to develop, it may still spike and...

A Couple of parvis in Bloom & Bud

I have gone through quite a few HCM over the years and my experience with the hybrid is about the same as what others say. They are very very short-lived in bloom. I count from the day the flower has fully opened up which can be somewhere from couple of days to a few days. To me, it's like as...
