    Calypso bulbosa in the wild

My son moved to Sooke in January. Yesterday he sent me a picture posted by someone in Sooke of a Calypso blooming in their backyard. I've always wanted to see one of these. I think you were photobombed by a hummingbird just over 6 minutes in.

What did you do to force it?

    Best source for culture supplies

I use P658 (with agar) or P668 (add your own agar) from Phytotec for Phrags. Use it 1/2 strength, adjust the sugar (+ 10gms.), add 100ml coconut water and/or 50gms of banana (I use both). For other species I use Hill's medium from Gallup & Stribling. There are also mediums available from...

    Phrag andreettae Round 2!

The pod should be ripe in about 90 days.

    Phragmipedium Beaumont

Oddly, this cross hasn't been used in breeding, as far as I can tell. I'd like to see it crossed with kovachii. I may have some spare pollen, if you're interested. I can sow the seed.

    Phragmipedium Acker's Berry

I have a couple that haven't bloomed yet. The white from the Candyland came through a bit, but the contrast is lost. Still it's a nice flower.

    Phragmipedium Acker's Berry

Is this the one made with Waunakee "Candyland"?

    Phrag sargentianum

Should be an interesting cross using that clone.

    Very intense colour!

    Phrag Fliquet 4N

I'm glad that there will be a place for your orchid collection at the new place. The greenhouse looks great. Maybe you could use some of the recycled black pipe to rig up a passive solar heating system, assuming the sun shines there in the winter. I imagine it's pretty cloudy and wet.

Nice to hear from you! It sounds like things are going well. Where will you go when you sell the house?

    Phrag schlimii forma Manzurii

    Beautiful! I love the shape.

    Phragmipedium fischeri

Mine are also very slow growing. I have plants from 3 different vendors. I think it might be an inherent trait. Congratulations on blooming it and keeping it alive.

    Phragmipedium dalessandroi

That's quite an impressive show! I like the colour contrast on the dalessandroi. The yellow pouch is quite striking. Are the round propeller-like things on the plastic bins in the background vents??

    Phrag schlimii

Nice one! There are lots of seedpods on the plants. That's nice to see.

    Phrag. Mem Juan Alberto Arias

I think it's pretty nice. It's clearly at least 3/4 kovachii. It has the kovachii colour break. I love the dark colour and the shape is good. My kovachii opened yesterday at 12.5 cm, so the size is not that small. Is it fragrant? Where do you send your pollen?

    A tetraploid Jason Fischer

That is a very pleasing shape. Is your plant really only 17 cm? That's just under 7 inches.
