    Amitostigma pingucula

Anybody familiar with this little darling? I have a couple of its tubers arriving in tomorrow’s mail; could not resist the accompanying photos but know nothing about it. The purveyor is suggesting a mixture of sphagnum and akadama, which I can provide…seems like it’s a cool grower that becomes...

    Paphiopedilum fairrieanum

Exquisite and WOW these photos! Thank you for showing the full plant too. I'm curious; this is a first bloom but I see multiple growths in the pot... did the seedling produce multiple growths before it bloomed or is that a compot? Your foliage looks so compact and pristine.

    your oldest orchids

Thank you! Lord I hope it opens. Still a ways to go but WOW did this stem move FAST so far. I will definitely be selfing! Maybe someone wants pollen too...

    First Deflasking: Paph. spicerianum

Yeah I have a cast-off spicerianum that will throw three new fans per growth, per year; its flowers are genetically screwed up so that its dorsal is crooked and never folds but I keep it because I know it's pure and I do cultural experiments on it. I don't know how fast the Brunos grow but...

    paph concolor

Aw I'm really sorry you had to learn the hard way. I love the way some slippers provide a cuppy hood to shelter the precious pollinia.

I'm always happy to talk mushrooms. Identifying from photos can be tricky; here's a link with helpful tips to give it the best chance. I do work for various poison-control centers and am often tasked with identifying a mushroom from vomitus so with decent photos it's usually a comparative piece...

    fairreianum

That is fire, mister! Congratulations and thank you for the wonderful photo. I forget how hirsute they are. Nothing like them.

I I will simply be DAMNED: when I went to water the big girl today, look what literally smacked me in the face!

    Paphiopedilum gratrixianum

T Major visible differences! I’m wondering if the “main plant” was perhaps unknowably a compot?

first ever flask, Paphiopedilum fairrieanum question

Aw my pleasure! I would like to name something after Judy, she would be shy about it but hopefully now she’s past that :). I put the seedling into LECA at its first repotting, not directly from flask but after 2 years in seedling bark. This was a seedling with only two roots had one broke off...

    First Deflasking: Paph. spicerianum

Were they shipped from Chicago? If so, I bet they’re Terry Parker’s plants and if he says “jungle-collected,” you can believe they’re the real deal. I’ve been to his greenhouse space many times. If you are in Chicago and get a chance, go! He revered space at Orchids by Hausermann in Villa Park...

    paph concolor

Curious; what “help” are you trying to provide? This flower is lovely. The uniform dotting is particularly sweet on this one. They’re not meant to be flat. I hope you can celebrate this perfect flower as the natural evolutionary achievement it is.

I am sorry for your troubles and hope you can get some decent shoes. I got a $400 pair of boots from a thrift store yesterday for $10. I no longer shop for shoes at regular retail outlets. I am hard on shoes and boots due to my mushroom foraging and need good quality footwear due to injuries...

    Some seedling progress

Is that a single plant or a compot? Wow. Under 2 years???

    Corybas hispidus 'Red'

I became avaricious the moment I saw the pics here; how do you grow them?

    Corybas hispidus 'Red'

Oh wow. This bloodcolored jewel just shot to the top of my list! Where do you get them? Emydura says they’re easy… how easy? How do you do it? Congratulations!

    Phragmipedium longifolium 'Elk #1'

I do feel that most if not all of us grow these plants for the meditative they provide. My life can be shite but when I get a bloom, a little piece of me is healed.

first ever flask, Paphiopedilum fairrieanum question

Wow, thank you! I have felt disappointed that it took so long. Someone else in here or Orchid Board or somewhere bloomed some in 3 years from flask and I felt like I was doing something wrong. It’s funny though that when they DO produce a flush of growth, it seems very very fast. This bud was...

first ever flask, Paphiopedilum fairrieanum question

Thank you! I’m just thrilled that people notice the roots. It’s why I use clear containers. “Root porn” is a term I learned from the Neofinetia freaks and I grow many of those just for root porn! There was SO much good help in this thread. My number one takeaway is, don’t separate the clump...

first ever flask, Paphiopedilum fairrieanum question

lol I’m happy to but those are repurposed drink containers! I think that particular one is from a “Naked” brand smoothie drink but I have some that are made from iced-tea beverage containers that have a concave bottom end, simulating Aircone on a small scale. I like tall, slender, square-shaped...
