Hey,
Is anyone still buying from Oak Hill Gardens?
They only sell locally now, no shipping, unfortunately.

First, I would need to know what they still have.
Then, I'd like to get some plants from them shipped to California.
Would anyone like to do that for me?

I'll pay!
Thanks,
Adam

That Garden Center, as I understand it, is where Chuck is located. They bought Oak Hill's business and tried to be orchid sellers, but apparently that wasn't working, so that part is out of business. I don't know what happened to all the plants -- maybe, as Eric said, they are still at that Garden Center.

It's really a shame the state of the orchid industry today. I had been ordering from Oak Hill since I was ~12 years old and finally got to meet Greg and Liese when they began vending at our New Orleans show. I got to be pretty good friends with them, and they would bring my brother and I orchid goody bags each year they'd vend. I hope their family is still doing well. It's unfortunate to see what they built over the years is now no more after just a few years of them selling the business.

The internet has changed everything. Orchids are expensive to grow in most of the US. and people have more access to orchids around the world through brokers, even US growers of Paphs are acting like brokers, using Hawaiian growers to minimize costs of growing their stock to stay competitive. It's just not sustainable to have large greenhouses committed to orchids in most of the US, but the availability of orchids is better and more diverse.

Better and more diverse, if you like NoIDs of the very easiest things to grow.

And in the coming years there will be nothing else except hybrids from hobby growers. Just wait until USPS stops rapid deliverymor accepting live plants at all.

After working for Seattle Orchid .. I have come to realize that ST is but a drop in the bucket of representation of orchid growers..probably best they stay away from such pessimism

Lance. Now you're scaring me.

Kidding aside I would not be surprised to see more shipping restrictions and not less.

Well, if that's not motivation to expand our collections and trade privately, then I dont know what is.
