dear Istvan,
yes,yes yes, you say what I think and feel since long times: We want to rescue these plants..
and our politicians do not do anything for this... only place borders on our way
if government does not agree to CITES there is no regulation, if government does this there is (here in Germany ) overregulation in any cases
so we are on us alone
I did hope 30 years ago that other nurseries or private people would go also the way of legalizing and breeding all these beautiful plants
but maybe it is not much interesting enough
I here in Germany did find my end in 2018 regulation of `origin country status`` at CITES, so for me all newly discovered species are forbidden land, I am not allowed to import them and try to propagate
the law is existing, as I remember Antec Laboratories work for saving and legalizing p. vietnamense many years ago I got flasks from them with legal US export CITES so all legal vietnamense of the next generations here in Europe came from that, at that time I had good hope to get on with this but since that never again an new discovered species was brought into propagation and trade in this way
Indeed Hilmar/Asendorfer follows all the regulations, and he is one of the rare ones.
As for the vietnamense and why there won't be more new species that are entered in the trade legally like it, let me relate to Paphiopedilum gigantifolium. There were 2 legal exports of it from Malaysia, out of Indonesia.
One export to Hawaii was canceled because the guy swapped legal sanderianum on the same CITES with a huge pile of wild collected sanderianum. Eventually the CITES was canceled, and therefore the gigantifolium on it were not legal.
One export to France was fully legal, they even did extensive research from Malaysia to Indonesia, and, voila, that gigantifolium was legal.
A German nurserymen ( and not Hilmar who is a gentlemen...) then asked a stupid French man for a division of this species 'that he loved soooooo much'. That stupid French gave the division as a gift, along with a copy of the said CITES.
The Germany nurserymen then contacted a few US and Taiwanese customers the week after ' Paphiopedilum gigantifolium, you have stock that became overnight illegal due to the Hawaii CITES permit, I AM HERE TO HELP YOU! 5000US for a division of legal gigantifolium'
He sold about a dozen plants/flasks to various people, making a but close to 40.000US at that time. The stupid French man, well he had just bought the gigantifolium, made the CITES documents, made all legal and he got zero. As of now, all the gigantifolium and its hybrids came out of my plant... Congrats for being an idiot who invested for nothing.
As for vietnamense ,what happened is that Antec invested a lot of time in it, and helenae. They made a very difficult cooperation to get access to seized plants for propagation, etc... A lot of effort. They sold... the number of flasks that were required to legitimize all the illegal stocks around the world, species, hybrids, and so on.
It is unlikely that anyone would invest again the time and money to run a charity. Make the work, pay a lot, waste a lot of time, to legalize the other's plants.
