Cymbidium goeringii ‘Kourin’ (Japanese variety) 日本春蘭「光琳」February 9 2024. This is a Japanese Cymbidium goeringii that produces orange flowers. A wildtype Cymbidium goeringii produces green flowers. This is an early blooming variety. The flower buds are produced every year at the end of July/early August and blooms at the end of January/early February. To produce a vibrant orange flower, the flower buds must be developed in the dark from the very beginning and only receive light for the last 2 weeks of its development just before blooming. From budding to blooming, it takes at least 6 months. Unlike Chinese Cymbidium goeringii, Japanese Cymbidium goeringii is not fragrant, it is grown for its vibrant flower colours. Kourin is a robust and easy to grow variety. This year, the flower colour is nicer than previous years and the stem is also taller than previous years. Grown in Toronto, Canada.
