A month after the first photo, the spike is 8" tall, and the first bud is beginning to expand.

Darn! I could have started things off - had a paph bloom with dorsal & pouch - no petals!

Update

Well, there are multiple problems with the first flower, which opened the other day. I could tell a couple weeks before it opened there was something wrong, but i didn't tell in case it turned out alright. The main problem was that the right petal was half petal, half pouch. I cut the pouch part off, so now it is just a half petal! The dorsal is also lop-sided. HOWEVER, touch wood the second bud looks like it will be normal. The pouch on this bloom is really nice and so is the left petal, so with any luck I will have a nice bloom to post on in a couple weeks. Here it is:
