Paphs-in-Colo

Guest
I'm Jaye. I've grown paphs for about 15 years.

I used fluorescent bulbs for a few years, but plants got neglected too often down in the basement. Now they're all on wall shelves with natural light and a ceiling fan. They're happier there, and the electric bill is lower.

Blooming now is my oldest (15 years) and best plant, Rosy Dawn 'superbum'. In a few days, I'll have 4 blooms on it at the same time, yay! It has bloomed every year for me, usually 2-3 flowers.

I like species and primary crosses, especially those with beautiful leaves (I'm not great at getting them to bloom), also African violets and tillandsia. They all coexist on 28' of shelves on a tall wall, to give you an idea of the size of my set-up.

What a wide-flung group of slipper lovers (even Luxembourg - cool)!

Dot, I will indeed take and post a photo. Shelves are from necessity (3 kids and a feisty plant-eating cat).

Ernie, I knew I'd "see" you here :)

my plant shelves

Here's what we call my "wall of plants". The windows above face southeast, and there's a big picture window on the opposite side - super spot for the plants, with some care required to place things on the right shelf.

When I took the picture, a few orchids were basking in fresh air outside, so it's usually a bit more crowded. Not much is blooming now; it'll be more colorful in a month or so. You can see some junk on the shelves that I could move to make room for more orchids :) The top shelf is about 7', hard for me to reach, but a perfect spot for my big hydrocultured Den. That's cool, Jaye. I had something like this when I lived "in town." But your light is much better -- I had to put fluorescent tubes under my shelves.

Rosy Dawn

Yes, Ross, that's Rosy Dawn. Here it is at dawn a few days ago. I'm still waiting for #4 to open, then I'll try to get a really nice picture.
