Forecast waves from the tsunami slated to start hitting Japan's shores around 1:30 PM (it is now 10:45 AM). Looking ominous, up to 10 feet for the northeast coast of Honshu. Even here they are forecasting up to a foot and a half which is pretty amazing considering we are on the opposite coastline.

Yes, on the news, the Tsunami in Hawaii was not a problem at all. I hope that's true with Japan and everywhere else it's supposed to hit. Keep us appraised, Tom.

Tom -- where are you???

Is it true that the wave(s) weren't problematic?

I'm on the southernmost island on the west coast facing away from the oncoming tsunami. There was a wave that was around 4 feet in Hokkaido and some places along the north coast of Honshu had waves up to 3 feet. Those caused some limited and brief flooding, nothing serious. Locally the water went up about a foot late at night. So, dodged this one!

In 1960 a similar quake in Chile created a tsunami that killed 140 in Japan and 61 in Hawaii - so, these events have to be taken seriously. Japan with its population centers located next to the water are particularly prone to tsunamis.
