I've been lurking here for a few years and finally decided to join. I live just north of New Orleans, but I'm currently a freshman at Louisiana State University. I've been growing orchids for more than 12 years. I grow mostly species. I think slippers are very interesting, though I haven't totally gotten their culture down. I tend to overwater. With that being said, I grow many vanda alliance species and interesting minis. I hope to continue to learn from this community and one day to be able to add to the discussions!

Welcome to SlipperTalk! One of the great things about this forum is that everyone can contribute to the discussion whether they're a newbie or an experienced veteran! Feel free to chime in any time! We'd also love to see photos of your plants!

Welcome!

As a fellow college student (and periodic lurker), I have a question - how do you move all your plants around between school and wherever you are in the summers/winters? I've been tweaking my method for some time, but I'd love to know if you have any particularly good ideas.

Welcome, goods! Glad you are here. Every new person adds their own experience and perspective, and that enriches us all.

Thanks all for the warm welcome!

Brian, as of last Thursday, there were no signs of breaking dormancy yet. jmelot, nearly all of my epiphytic plants are mounted and I have them in a greenhouse-like enclosure. There's a sprinkler set on a timer for water. Also, I have my family pretty well-trained on their care. My dad is a landscape architect, so he is very knowledgeable when it comes to plants, and my younger brother has caught the addiction from me. Most of my collection stays in there, and I am close enough to home that I'm there at least once a month.

I am building a small terrarium for some of my more sensitive minis (Pleurothallids, Angraecoids, etc) that I can easily transport to and from school.

Welcome Goods

In college and already growing orchids for 12 years!! Was this a family tradition?

I also grow species (and a heavy handed waterer). You might try the basket culture for paphs that I've been using now for a few months.

Based on the latest info, it sounds like maybe they aren't moved much. I have moved with plants a lot though so...underbed rubbermaid containers on wheels work pretty well if nothing is in high spike. And that was with a trunk. What kind of car is involved? What do you do now?

Rick, I bloomed my first Catt hybrid when I was 7. I wouldn't exactly call it a family tradition, but my dad is a landscape architect, who specialized in interesting southern natives. That is where I attribute my interest in plants. Orchids have always intrigued me and I think the "odd" species are the most interesting. I consider orchids odd plants in general, so maybe that's why I became interested in the first place. I don't exactly remember. I have about 80 plants and about a 60/40 species to hybrid ratio. The hybrids are survivors from when I was young plus a few I use to test my culture on genera I'm no totally comfortable with.

I used to keep my slippers indoors but they began to suffer since I'm no longer home. I decided to try the basket method with some because I had a Paph. armeniacum that is doing well in a basket with heavy watering. I moved a delenatii, spicerianum, and emersonii into baskets about two weeks ago. These get watered 3 times a week. Since then, every growth on each of these plants has started a new leaf. Many had been stuck in suspended animation for nearly a year. So far, I have to say, this method is great!

Also, yes, Heather I tried to keep a few plants with me while I was in the dorm, but keeping humidity up and finding space was an issue. I do plan to move a few next year since I'll have my own room in an apartment.
