You might likely know Sarah Hadean who manages the living plant collection at Smithsonian (which includes 6,000 orchids.) She was an intern at Longwood for a few years about the same time, I think.Welcome from Madeira!
I'm new here too, but I've been into orchids for about 25 years ago. I was an intern in 2000 at Longwood Gardens and got to manage all of the orchid houses while the head gardeners took vacations, so I really found my love of orchids right there in your backyard.
Yes I have found the same. I agree that there are for sure many downsides with outdoor growing. I haven't had any bug issues but I do find the seedling and compots keep growing more consistently indoors. I like when the plants can get thoroughly flushed by a big rain though.
