One of my favourite with huge flower, as big as my hand.First flower.

how do you know its 4n?

I only suppose, leaves are wide, flower much bigger, almost twice than normal form.

4N means that every somatic cell contains 2 pais of chromosomes. In normal case a somatic cell contains one pair of every chromosome, it called 2N.

Oh no...i only suppose.I have more regular hirsus from different sources.All has narrow leaves and smaller flower. It has wilde leaves and huge flower.That is why i think it may be 4N plant.

Oh, I understand polyploids, I have numerous 4n plants and they are all a little larger and thicker, but none twice as large. What I didn't understand was the suggestion that this could be a hybrid. What could you cross with hirsutissimum that would increase the size so much, but not otherwise change the flower? Mike

I wonder what the outcome would be, if you crossed the typical variety with var. esquirolei - maybe hybrid vigour and a larger plant and flower, that was indiscernable from the the typical form (or maybe almost so)?
Istvan, we definately need that chromosome count for your beautiful flower!

I will have a tipo hirsu but album variety in flower, I will make pics for comparison ( because of size difference, of course)

It was Paph. Hans Stral. Many were masquerading as hirsutissinum 4n. See pic below.


Of course, hard to tell as some looked like giant hirsutissinum.
