A slow flowing stream of smelly water and full of scum would be called stagnant water even though it is in motion.

:confused: I'd call that a polluted stream, not a stagnant one. If it's a stream, it's flowing. By definition, even the one you cited....

(stagnant

adjective uk /ˈstæɡ.nənt/ us /ˈstæɡ.nənt/

stagnant adjective (NOT FLOWING)

› (of water or air) not flowing or moving, and smelling unpleasant:
a stagnant pond
),

....if there is movement, the term "stagnant" does not apply, because to be stagnant requires no flow or movement. Show me a (slow), flowing stream "of smelly water and full of scum", that did not get that way from outside pollution influences; but rather, got that way all by itself, as it flowed.....and I'll show you a Unicorn. I doubt you can come up with a single example of a slow flowing stream that got into such bad condition all by itself, with NO pollution being added. Why?....because flowing water, even slow flowing water, picks up Oxygen and therefore, does not become anaerobic. Being anaerobic is the cause of the bad smells (mostly methane gas, given off by anaerobic bacteria) and scum.

'Can't argue/debate/defend, against this logic. Now you're being deliberately and selectively ignorant, even of the very information that YOU brought to the discussion, simply for argument's sake. I feel stupid for even engaging with you when you posted your opposition to my comments. I hesitated and almost didn't post anything in the first place because I've learned what sort of posts get your attention and I suspected YOU would have issues and try to pick holes with the information in my reply to Angela's inquiry. In hind sight, I should've known better than to post at all, or at least, to bother to reply to you when you decided to be anal over the definition of "stagnant". So, I give up. Once again....as always, YOU da' man, Lance! Give yourself a star.

Angela asked to discuss the subject.... DISCUSS : talk or write about (a topic) in detail, taking into account different ideas and opinions.

John you should learn how to discuss a subject without having a meltdown and making personal and insulting attacks. I was not arguing with you or even saying you were wrong. Your calling me ignorant and anal is just not appropriate and is very rude.

My comments were made in good sincere faith with the intention of discussing the subject. Whether you agree or not there is some different use and understanding of the phrase "stagnant water". I'm not the only one in the discussion who commented that stagnant suggests "polluted" to some people.
