This is the second time in 12-13 years that we've had this gingko & the beautiful leaves actually changed color on the tree! Normally the leaves fall off while they're still green. Does it prefer a hot summer with dry fall?

Is it a boy or a girl?

Girls drop orange propagules that smell like rotten trash with a really good amount of spoiled milk. I'd rather smell a bulbo. :)

I think it may depend on temperature. If a cold snap occurs before the leaves change, they will fall off, if it doesn't come, the color changes first, then they fall. It seems I have been told the leaves all tend to fall in a couple days, and it can go from a fully leafed golden tree, then get hit by a very cold night and wham, within a day all the leaves are on the ground.
And it is true, the females are selected against for urban living due to their maloderous fruit.

No joke. The come in two sexes. And the propagules smell awful. REally, really awful.

The ginko trees on my block turn yellow every year. The one in front of my house is the last one to turn in the Fall and the first one to leaf out in the Spring. It's a gorgeous tree. By the way, my city only plants male trees. "No girls allowed" is the general rule. So we deal with pollen in the spring but don't have to worry about anything dropping to the ground (other than leaves) in the Fall.

That's odd. We've got tons growing on the boulevards here & to the best of my experience they always change yellow in the fall.

Ernie's not joking. The female "fruits" contain butyric acid, which smells like vomit...at best. The seeds themselves are edible and used in Chinese cooking. So every fall I see these Chinese ladies wearing gloves collecting the fruits from the female gingkoes. These are all old trees...NYC will only plant males from now on.

There are a bunch on campus at GW in DC. I used to smell that stench in the quad outside the bio building and always thought "sheesh, someone needs to seriously clean out those trash cans" then realized it was the ginkgoes when the smell followed me around on my shoes. Yuck! They changed from green to yellow as far as I can remember. Sometimes the ones on campus at UI Chicago would drop green leaves. Sounds like a climate/temperature thing.

This is also Ginkgo :) She doesn't change colour in the fall.

I've been wondering for a long time if I should plant one in my large backyard. I'm simply not certain it can be hardy where I live. Maybe I'll try one next spring!

This is not what I expected from this post/thread! Live & learn some more on ST! It appears we have a picky tree, there's only so many times getting close to it with a saw & threatening it is gonna work!
When I took these pics it was quite windy & I thought for sure, the one time the leaves actually turn yellow on the tree, now the wind is gonna take them off! Nope, they held tight for several windy days! Yes when they start to fall, yellow or green, they do go fast, just a few days, makes raking easy!

Gingkos are a great favorite of mine! Here in California, we're always happy for any fall colors! And the long history and fascinating idiocyncracies of the male vs female trees are also cool! My first memory of knowing anything about that was up in Sonoma, CA, on the central plaza near my home at the time. I frequently saw the chinese folks picking up the sticky nuts. Somehow, I could never bring myself to do so...
