The Kyoto tour rolls on.

The second day there we started out by going on a boat trip down a river. The Hozu River flows through a gorge coming out of the mountains and skirting the western flank of Kyoto. We took a train up river to the next town, Kameoka, and from there floated down to Arashiyama, a suburb of Kyoto.

A typical scene off the side of the boat. There was no serious white water, but plenty of rapids. Two men steered the boat using long poles, one in front and one in back, and one man rowed in the calm parts - by far he had the most strenuous work!

Another view showing a side stream's canyon. The entire trip took about one hour and forty-five minutes.

With only a few kilometers to go a boat came along side us and strapped on - yes, indeed, a floating store with snacks and drinks. Very smart gimmick, keep people on a boat for over an hour in the sun and they will buy anything.

Once back on land we had lunch at a traditional Japanese hotel situated right on the river. A lovely experience, but it weren't cheap!

After lunch we ventured north towards our next destination, Jojakkoji and its famous moss garden. On the way we saw these "Buddha feet" carved in a stone.

The tour will continue soon!

OMG. I miss those foods, especially the one the lady is making..... Thank you for sharing.

Very cool.
If I ever get to Japan, I am asking you for travel advice, Tom!

When I was in the Grenadines sailing, we had a similar experience with the "shopping" at our island ports every day. The locals had quite an economy going. Every morning anything from sweet rolls to lobster would be offered alongside your sailboat. Kinda of neat (but not the cheapest source of goodies!)
