Hi all,
Does anyone know where I could get some clear plastic pots that are taller than they are wide? I've got a large phrag that is in an 8" pot that is plenty wide enough, but it is only 6" tall, and is not tall enough for the plant. I can't get the plant to sit down in the pot far enough.

I prefer clear pots...I love to see roots growing!

TIA!

I use Cymbidium pots, which are about twice as tall as their typical standard pot counterpart. They are also somewhat conical, narrower at the base than the top, and they have excellent drainage. But they are black.

I've been trying to figure this out for weeks, and in literally minutes I get the answer! Another member PMd me to say that I can find 8" x 8" pots at First Rays! Somehow I had not realized that Ray had pots that tall.

I might have to try some cymbidium pots too.

Thanks, ST!

Yes, Ray has them. You can also get very similar containers from Gordon's Foods. You have to drill holes in them, or use a soldering iron. But they are ideal for Phrags.

I recently needed a clear, deep pot larger than 8". I looked everywhere, and found my solution at the thrift store. I found an old Tupperware container just the right dimensions. It's not crystal clear, but I can easily see roots through it, and it is nearly entirely clear when wet. I used a soldering iron to make large holes in the bottom, air vents on the sides. I even added an inverted 3" net pot in the middle of the bottom (melted Tupperware plastic = great glue) to make it an "oxygen core" pot.

Thanks everyone! Those are good ideas!

I have a hot glue gun that is devoted to pot hole melting!

Good idea! Although I will confess that I just talked my daughter out of using my hot glue gun yesterday by showing her that it has no glue in it, and that the tip is stuck full of plastic! (Now, don't anybody tell her that the plastic would melt away immediately once it was heated up!)

Hello,

I'm using food containers from a local packaging shop. You can see the type of tub I'm using in the besseae thread: http://www.slippertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20464 It stands about 1.5x as tall as it is wide. This tub is about 3 inches wide. I think they are called Joli tubs. I just punch holes in the sides. For the Disa and Phrags I don't punch holes in the bottom, only about 1.5 cm from the bottom so the bottom of the tub holds some water. The tub is flushed with water almost every day.

Have an ice pick laying around doing nothing? Just heat the tip! Do the same with an old phillips screwdriver.

Use a large cheap solder iron. Make the holes 3/8" or 1/2" in diameter. That way when the roots grow out the holes the drainage does not get plugged as quickly. And when you repot you might be able to not break off the roots.

My suggestion for holes is to nest a few pots together and drill with a wide bit through all of them.

Would work well, BUT you'd get holes lower and lower on the containers for those higher up the stack. If you just want a lot of holes, cool, but if you do s/h, not so much.
