Hi again,

My second award, it received a 78 point HCC last night by the Australian Orchid Council, I believe it has an AM in the USA as well. Maybe I can get an AM over here for it in the future. Anyway the colour is a sensation, really amazing and it seems easy to grow.

(welischii x Angel Frost). Well worth the award. Healthy plant and the potting mix looks just right. Congrats!

Awesome! Congratulations!

Are you starting to grow on your living room furniture like NYEric!!!??? :)

I can imagine Eric writing a book that could be titled: ''Growing Orchids on Stove Tops''. :)

i did a big presentation on modern masdies for judging and it came out that welischii is right at the top of the list for a number of hybridizers; using it makes plants that do exactly what you've described and shown: easy and vigorous growth, and a bunch of flowers in a little pot with no staking required. I like to think of it as akin to veitchiana in color but much more compact and easier to grow. Another species on everyone's radar is discoidea - great colors for this as well!! The other big thing to look for is oryzalin-converted tetraploids of both species and primaries (although the Saltatrices-group hybrids like Angel Frost are probably not great candidates for this, as ease of growth and poly-floral habit seem to be the goals in these lines). I saw some great 4n Falcatas and a very nice 4n ignea strain while doing the research for the presentation. John Leathers (Hawk Hill Orchids) is doing some great things...

Thanks for the information, I am going to check out John's website, maybe I can get him to Australia as a guest speaker and he can bring some flasks.......................

Mountain Orchids in Vermont also has very nice masdevallias. I got my draculas from them and they were nice big plants.

i am hoping to add to my masdy collection in the next few months, will be getting more from Mountain Orchids and I'll have to try Hawk Hill too.

I love masdies and they grow and flower pretty well in my intermediate/cool conditions. too bad my poor rothschildianum have to deal with the same :)
