I love the alba Maudiae types. This one is quite nice. The dorsal is round and broad with clearly defined green and white stripes all the way to the base of the dorsal. I like the broadness of the petals and the way the petals are held up well. The ventral sepal frames a pleasantly shaped pouch. I love it! Is the flower held up on a long stem?

The worst is that it seems that only the albino is alive of those Paphiopedilum nigritum, maybe 1 or 2 colored individuals more worldwide. They were a callosum/barbatum related species that was found in large quantites out of Sarawak in the late 80s to early 2000s. Many went to Japan back then, if not nearly all. It is definitely not a synonym of barbatum.

One can find a few photos of the coloratum ones on the Japanese websites.

I suspected. Still delightful. I have seen plants marketed as var nigritum - are you saying that in reality the coloratum type of nigritum essentially doesn't really exist in cultivation? I have never actually looked up the distinguishing features with barbatum, I guess I will now

nigritum is a name that was applied to dark barbatum in the trade, but it has nothing to do with the original nigritum, which came from Borneo specifically. There are some rare photos of real nigritum on internet, most on Japanese websites...

I won't assess if Paph. nigritum really excists or if it is a synonym of Paph. barbatum. But if it was really found on Borneo island at least the origin of both are different. At least there is a photo of Paph. nigritum on Jay Pfahl website 'orchidspecies.com' ... if it shows it or another plant, I won't assess.

The name nigritum was used very often for plants which look like barbatum or near barbatum, but also for plants which look more like lawrenceanum. But the base for the name is the description and the herbarspecimen nit the labels at the plants. Cribb analyzed the specimen and as a result he wrote that it is a synonym of barbatum. Which plants were labeled later as nigritum is another point.
Here is the sketch of the true Cypripedium nigritum, made by Reichenbach f. 1882 and the typesheet with handwritten description. Then here also 2 pictures of modern nigritum from Japan. One is nigritum 'Tsukuba Dream' 1997 and nigritum Saeki
