Hi all,

After reading through all the fascinating speculation in the hangianum thread

http://www.slippertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16717

I'm almost afraid to venture an ID on this one. It was labelled as Paph In-Charm Handel at the Manitoba Orchid Society show and I couldn't resist taking one, in spite of the fact there seemed to be some doubt about the vendor and the ID of the plants. At any rate, it spiked, and the bloom developed very quickly. So, does this look like In-Charm Handel? Or something else?

Here's the plant in bloom:

For those who like whole plant photos, I took it out so the plant doesn't blend into the background so much:

One reservation I have about its ID is how short the spike is. I've been informed a delenatii and hangianum cross should be much taller. Your thoughts on this would be most appreciated!

Cheers,

Rob

Gorgeous. Yes, the stem is short, but the flower shape and size looks exactly right to me. Perhaps stronger markings than I would expect but maybe as would be expected from a 'red' hangianum. I don't see anything in the flower that isn't parvi so I think the short stem is just an anomoly.

I can't see anything wrong with that. Here's one of mine, just to see some variation!

ID should be correct, a very nice in-charm handel!! Looks very sweet, like cotton candy! :)

It looks like In-Charm Handel to me. The short spike could be from the hangianum. I have a very nice hangianum that bloomed this past spring with a VERY short spike. It was barely tall enough to lift the huge flower up off the foliage.

I also agree with the others that the label is correct. And would add you have a very nice one.

Thanks for the nice comments about the color, as well as the reassurance it's correctly labelled. It really bugs me when I see obvious errors in labels, and they are so common! And, yes, it's far from symmetrical, alas. That could be an artifact of it being a first blooming, but it could also be a result of my less-than-stellar treatment of the plant during the bloom development.
