An FCC and a CCE at this past weekend at Jacksonville

MY mistake! This is NOT mine, just my awards photo. I'll give you two guesses who the grower was.

I think so David. Frank sure can grow the heck out of Paphs!

It sure is an incredibly grown plant. But the flower itself isn't great, certainly not worthy of an FCC award (IMHO). The dorsal is very wavy and I'm not that fond of the petal stance. Or is the FCC award in relation to the CCE and not to the flower itself?

David

I missed this show. :( We had a picnic for work and I was designated grill-master. BTW, it was 86, sunny, low humidity, and breezy for the picnic.

Very nicely grown - by whoever! If it was awarded, shouldn't the award come after the name, so Paph. Moustache 'Marion Smith' FCC/CCE/AOS?? The CCE is a cultural award, which makes sense, and the FCC is a flower quality award, and I can see why that is being questioned. Or, was this a previous FCC winner, but this blooming didn't come out as nice?

It won an FCC and a CCE. For what it's worth, the awards description reads, "flower form exceptional, nearly flat sepals and petals." Frank Smith is the grower.

To me, for something to be worthy of an FCC award it has to be right out of the box. Something that is as close to perfection as you can get. Something that leaves you gobsmacked when you first see it. An FCC award shouldn’t be handed out lightly. To be honest the first photo leaves me a little underwhelmed. I think it is struggling to deserve a HCC award myself. Maybe you need to see it in person to appreciate it.

If this is worth an FCC award what do you give some of the Paphs that Iweyshen has been posting. To me they are several levels better in quality.

I am not a judge, so I would appreciate comments from judges if they think I’m being harsh.

Well, I an tell you that the plant and its flowers were stunning. Six flowers on a spike is impressive. On the other hand, I was mildly surprised when I was told that it had won an FCC in addition to the CCE. I guess then entire plant was much more impressive to me. From a udging standpoint, wen taken as a whole, I believe that the score (92 pts) was accurate. Maybe my photography could use some improvement.

Well, I second David, and I acknowledge Brian for taking the blame.

An impressive plant it is.

Brian - the only criticism of your photography was that you didn't cover up the flaws. :poke: Certainly nothing wrong with the photographs. I just don't think you can give an FCC award for those sepals. They don't seem to be flat as per the judges comment.

The plant itself is truly amazing. I guess the judges are only human and it would be so easy to get carried away when confronted with such an incredible plant.

Thanks for the post.

David

Ooh La La! Great photo of a great plant!:drool:

Thanks for sharing!

The outline of the sepals are a little wavy, but they are extremely flat.
Something extraordinary considering a dorsal that curves over the pouch is a much too common flaw for the multiflorals.
