I had a lovely surprise when I took this orchid in for judging on Saturday. Although the judges had never seen a Paph. platyphyllum before they were quite impressed by the size of this one ("This paph's on steroids!"), among other things. It was interesting for me to see and hear their reactions as I've lived with this plant for nearly five years and it feels like an old friend to me. I posted pictures of it on this forum last year when it bloomed for the first time and was encouraged to take it for judging........thank you Leslie Ee........but unfortunately it was past its prime by the time we had the next judging session here. So this year I decided to take the ferry to Victoria and attend the session there while the blooms were still very fresh. Travelling with a plant this size in a Toyota Prius was quite the challenge but thankfully the weather was good that day and we had a smooth sailing.

Congratulations for sure! An FCC? I would be on top of the world. It's very nice.
Thank you. It was pretty surreal. When the judges were beginning to score the photographer whispered for me to follow him into the hallway. He told me it's going to be an FCC but I didn't believe him. Then the score came in at 89.5. The lead judge came over to me and said "There's no way I'm going to allow for this to NOT be an FCC". He had the lowest scoring and highest scoring judges submit scores again and it averaged out to 90 and a bit. It was a nail biter for sure but very interesting to see the process unfold. I think I was more on top of the world the next day when I wasn't feeling so stressed!

Stunning! Was that 5 years from seedling? I got a seedling last year and it is growing fast, though there are so many mislabelled plants going around I am a bit sceptical if I have the real one.

Yes, it was a seedling five years ago. It took a little while to adjust to my conditions but once it did it grew very well. Being so large I didn't expect to see it bloom again a year after the first bloom but here we are, and now the third growth is already quite large so barring any disasters it should hopefully be blooming again next year. Good luck with yours. Mine likes to be watered and fertilized regularly year round and it can handle higher light. The leaves are quite broad and more of a bluish green than deep green. Hopefully yours is the real deal. You're going to love seeing it bloom.

Meh, they can skip ahead. Your detail is colorful. ❤️
I suppose I'm not one to leave much to the imagination.
BTW, if you remember my Belle of the Ball debacle where I accidentally tore off one of the petals, I absolutely DID NOT allow myself to touch a single petal on this one! Lesson learned, award earned :)
