Nice shape flower Jean. I flowered one of these from a plant of similar size to yours and the flower was small. 3 years later I'm waiting for the plant to start growing again, didn't like flowering at all that size, hope you have better luck than I did.

Roy, is the answer to wait for the next flower before you should enjoy it? Cut the stem off after about a week or two after opening? I like the flower. Very nice.

Faan, I'm not sure what the answer is. In my experience, with some Paphs it doesn't matter if they flower off small or large plants, they just grow on happily where others, particularly off single growth plants raise the white flag and say I'll start to grow again when I feel like it and whether you cut the spike off or not.

I think these are pretty and under appreciated. Thanks for posting Jean

I have one that has been in continuous bloom on two spikes for about 2 years now.

Here is the second flower to open, and I was surprised to find a pouch with almost no color compared to the first bloom!!! Normal?? Jean

There's something very interesting about that pearly colour of the second flower.

Roy,
I've had similar experience with this species as you have had. One bloomed a number of years ago, it is now a 3 growth plant but with no blooms. I bought a mini compot of 4 a round the same time and it is still a mini compot! A third plant purchased in 98 that I recieved a CHM on is now the size of a seedling! I even selfed the CHM plant and have seedlings that are bigger then the mother plant! And I thought it was just me Roy. Thanks, I feel much better now:D knowing this species just doesn't like people!:)

Are you adding any oyster shell to the mix with these guys? These are supposed to come off of sloppy wet limestone hills. Mine grow fairly quickly. But I've had compots grow quickly and then stop until I changed the mix over. I've recently started top dressing them with bone meal.

I'll have to give that a try, thanks

Thanks, might have to try this myself. I have some bone meal as well as Oyster shell. ( I hope the plants like Oysters kilpatrick )

I've had my mother plant for about 5 years, and its always had oyster shell in the mix. I have seedlings from a selfing of it, and an outcross with one of Paphreeks primulinums. They are growing pretty good too, but kind of in fits and spurts (they seem to deplete media and stop, and speed up with fresh media).

I have been looking at the calcium - phosphorus issue since reading Sanderianums post on nutrition. Particularly his use of a high phosphorus fertilizer. Limestone has a high natural phosphorus composition. Oyster shell actually doesn't, but absorbs P like crazy, so as you fertilize it will suck up and hold the P in the potting mix. As the oyster shell breaks down the plants and microbes will use as needed.

Bone meal on the other hand is like presaturated oyster shell with a huge P reservoir. So right now I'm trending a little more towards the use of bone meal than oyster shell.
