This is a first bloom seedling. Paph. Red Dragon is Gloriosum x philippinense.
This cross was made by Jerry Fischer back in 1993! It has taken this long (16 years) to bloom! I think it is the only plant we have left of the cross, and probably the only one that ever bloomed. It is cute, but I don' think it is worth the wait. Who knows when it will bloom again....

I would have given up long ago on it. I think it is a very striking flower but still not worth a 16-year wait!

So now Robert the question is this. Do you pay to have this cross reg or toss it out and forget it was ever made? I'm assuming of course it's not registered yet.

Well, if you do decide to register it, might I suggest Paph Eternal Dragon?

That is a good name, or maybe better: Paph. Waiting for Eternity Dragon.

Probably as we just have one plant, and I don' think I will use it for further breeding (as I don't want to pass on the reluctant blooming gene), no I probably won't register it. I will probably keep it one more year and see if it blooms next year. If it doesn't, it will probably become compost.

very interesting pattern with those spots and stripes!!! This was an awfully long time, but if next year's flowering were even better !?? !! Jean

Interesting that (barbata x multi) crosses can take even longer than (brachy x multi) crosses to bloom.. I thought that these should be more compatible. Similarly Paph x Milmannii (callosum x philippinense) is occasionally available in Malaysia but nobody seems able to bloom them.. I guess remakes are in order.. :)

I think that one of the reasons this cross was so slow, was due to the rothschildianum used. Some of the earlier roths were very slow bloomers, and they tended to pass that along to their progeny. If I would remake the cross with one of the newer "faster" roths, I am sure this cross would bloom faster too.

I love the staminode on it! It's a very pretty bloom. I'm patient, but 16 years...?

Robert,

It might be an interesting experiment to see if a remake with faster roths will result in a faster-blooming hybrid. It is a lovely flower. But I'm not sure OL would want to take the chance and use the space needed to grow up a bunch of seedlings that might not bloom any faster. What do you think?

Best Regards,
Nik
