what's the deal with the color inconsistencies in the pouches of these? Ramon have you seen enough of these to tell one if pouch color inconsistencies are a big deal in judging or not? Even your other picture of Dave Sorokowsky's plant shows some...and it's a pretty good one...

Comments? anyone else seen this and think it's a bad thing? an un-judgable thing?

Tim,

The color inconsistencies is taken into account but to the point that it is acceptable. Is the color balance and pleasing. If it is to much of a distraction then yes it can screened but if it is not too much and balance, then point deductions. One must take into account of the breeding with cochlopetalum which has a pouch color that is not solid. it is usually pink with speckling this speckling when bred with other species, usually bleeds into venation or patches. One can see this on most of the awarded plant on this type of breeding. We cannot fault the plant since it is typical of the breeding. We must ask ourselves, Is the flower pleasing, balance and worthy? It is like faulting splash petal cattleyas and not awarding them since they are not flat because they are peloric. If a flower of this kind of breeding was presented with a nice bold and solid colored pouch then give the it the maximum points (FCC) given for color for pouch. This is my point of view and not the rule for AOS judging.

I hope this shed some light.

Form and colour are better than size, anyway. A huge, crappy flower is still a crappy flower. This one is REALLY gorgeous! The proportions are perfect and the colour is clear and bright. Wonderful!

Agree 100%. If it doesn't have nice colour what is the point.

I think this one compares favourably with the FCC awarded one.

Ramon,

of course it would be by degrees...i wonder though how much of this "color break" sort of thing would be tolerable in judging. the reason i ask is that so often paphs with color breaks are screened and it seems that these pouch color breaks are more frequently deemed acceptable. of course it has to do with the parentage, but at the same time the parentage of a Kevin Porter (due to incomplete saturation in micranthum) would indicate a high probability for color breaks, but when a flower has them, it is typically screened. i just think it's interesting to be inconsistent...i see your point. i hope the other one blooms with more than 1 flower next year :) thx for the great pix
