I won this division on E-Bay on 8/16/08.....I was suprised to notice a couple of weeks ago that is was starting to throw a spike......the seller did not have a blooming pic so I am not sure what to expect......LOL how much longer am I going to have to wait? BTW between the sunlight and the flash the leaves look more yellow on this division than they actually are....I hope it does not blast...I sometimes think I keep everything to dry as I have had a couple of plants that I bought that were spiking that have blasted.

The plant looks a bit stressed to me. I'd consider not letting it bloom, especially if the roots are iffy.

I'm not sure what to expect either, Magic Mood is a complex yellow/gold/green if I remember, then X'd with wardii, I wonder what they were trying for?
Keeping too dry as an attempt not to blast?:sob: I would think your asking for trouble there & increase the odds of blasting or deformed flowers. I don't know about others but I try to avoid a plant drying out when it's in bud. Definitely try to keep the humidity up.
Do you know what condition the roots are in or how many? I usually always repot to my mix even if a plant has been repotted from a vendor. The roots tell me what kind of mix & what the watering scedule should be.
Good luck!

I was not saying I keep them dry to keep them from blasting....I tend to grow dry letting my plants dry out and then water.....usually I water somewhere between every 7-14 days...so my plants really dry out.....as to the roots I had not repotted this or the other division that I won in the same auction as they both were suppose to have been just recently divided and repotted and judging by the look of the potting medium I had no reason to doubt that.....very new fresh potting medium......but after Candace had asked about the roots and GoldenRose I decided to repot and see........ here are a couple of pics of the Paph Wardii x Magic Mood division roots......it looks to me like it has decent roots and lots of new root tips.....I am no expert so what do you guys think?

Todd

p.s. I won these on 8/16 and the tags show they were divided and potted on 8/08 so the potting had to have been done sometime in the 16 days of August before I won them

Yes, the roots look fine. Maybe it is just the photo as the leaves looked stressed to me. But, it should be o.k.

:D Oh good! :D Let her go - let's see what that flower is gonna look like!
OMG what's it like to water at 7-14 day intervals! ;) Don't mind me, I'm the overwaterer so I have a light, quick drain mix, whatever works for you stick to it!

the leaves on this division are a lighter green but not as yellow as the look in the photo....LOL like I said between the flask and the sunlight it made the leaves look yellow.....the other division which is White Knight X Magic Mood....those leaves are a darker green....so I just assumed the Paph Wardii X Magic Mood cross was a lighter leaf color........the White Knight cross has some of the stiffest leaves I have seen so far on a plant......almost cardboard like....Rose I sometimes feel like I neglect my plants but with the mix I am using right now which is Aussie Gold and Kelleys Korner CHC mix ......7-14 days seems to work best for me....though like I said I wonder if I am letting them run so dry they will not bloom well

Lighter colored leaves could indicate grown in a stronger light level.
Do they grow well & bloom consistently? If so, it's working for you. All of us have had (or will) have at some point blasted buds & deformed flowers, it goes with territory. I did own one paph that blasted every single time, I believe it was a Papa Rohl. A good grower, would spike even 2 x a year, oh well ... it took a trip!

a few updated pics of the bloom spike on this one.......in the last pic there appears to be some white fuzz on the bloom.....I took a toothepick and brushed it off and the pic before it is without the white stuff.....then I wondered if the white stuff was a infestation of some sort??? any ideas? this plant and the other one I got from the same E-Bay vendor had this white stuff on them and if I do not brush it off it just stays in the same place which makes me think it is not any kind of insect and I have not seen it on any of my other paphs or any other orchid plants around these.....but any input is appreciated

Why should there always be problems??? :( The plant seems pretty happy now and growing good... And now this happens...!!! Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Yes, mealybugs. In case you aren't used to them, assume any plant within 3 meters has been exposed, and watch every plant you have. Check on the roots too.

***drumroll***

grrrrrr I meant to take a pic of the bloom yesterday when it was all still tight and swollen but not yet open......any guesses as to what its going to look like.....LOL I sort of cheated and have another pic I will post this evening.....since it is on the top shelf I was able to get a pic of the inside of the bloom by shooting upwards
