Paphiopedilum daoense: First Bloom!

Got this about 2 years ago from PaphParadise as NBS … it grew two large growths (40 cm leaves!) and pop out a cute flower on a 35 cm inflorescence… lots of leaf footage for a single flower lol. Dorsal and petals might still expand?

Culture: warm wet summers, cool dry winter, bright light.

All these P. gratrixianums, P. villosums and P. insignes have these longer leaves and therefore need more space and of course food. But their flowers are beautiful.

Ps. I still can't fathom, why such plants should be elevated to species status, rather than continue to be a variety of gratrixianum - even if this might warrant a broadening of the concept of said species?
The new taxonomic status, though, seems not to be generally accepted as Kew still treats it at varietal level (and relegates Paph. daoense to synonymity). Well, probably only time will show which conceptualisation prevails in the long run.
For the German reading, I've attached a file with the article, where no less than Averyanov, Gruß et al. describe P. daoense as a distinct species.
For the non German reading the article still contains a pleothora of photos of the varities of gratrixianum and includes wonderful in situ pictures of P. daoense.

Hi Jens, I have read that article. There are a lot of plants that have many kinds of variations in this group, and many have been given species status. Most of them are looking much alike. You know, like gratrixianum, insigne, villosum etc.
Can you tell me how much Die Orchidee magazine does cost these days? I have been thinking of ordering that. My mother got that quite many years. Her German was as good as German people, much better than mine. But I`m too lazy with my speaking it.

Dear Leslie, it doesn't look like the typical daoense. the typical one has more compact growths like the picture from the habitat shows. In the second volume of my book you find more pictures of this species.
