I purchased mini compot of this cross in 2016 not appreciating the time or space investment for multis. As the seedlings grew, I slowly sold them leaving me with one seemingly never blooming plant. Well, it is finally blooming. Needless to say I am excited, which is why I am sharing a preview. The first flower is open and four more are in bud. Hopefully they will make it, and I can give an update.

While philipenense x Johanna Burkhardt has not been registered, Wossner Black Wing x philipenense is registered as QF Ikaika. The philipenense seems to add color, which the photo does not due justice. That can be corrected in future pictures. The philipenense also narrows the petals. Time will tell that the final outcome it and what it adds to my collection.

All of the flowers are finally open. The final flower count is five. Not too shady for a first timer. Unfortunately, it is hard for the photo to capture the subtle red cast on the petals. Taking it into nature light would lightly help, but it has been cloudy and rainy for 5 days here. So taking photos outside is not an option. Maybe next week.

I have limited space for multiflorals and need to decide if this has a long term place in the collection. Thoughts?

Only thing I’d be questioning would be if the dorsal could perform better …. Either as a result of different culture (whatever magic it needs) or just plant size.

I like the general form and color of All the segments….

I gave away 2 out of 3 of a similar cross from Graham…. For exactly that problem…. Still waiting to see if I’m gonna get lucky with the 3rd

Thanks all.

@Ozpaph When it first opened, my thoughts were, "Great, I saw it flower. Now it can go." It was not that I did not like it. I just wondered if it was worth the space given some of the other multi-florals that i have hogging shelf space. It is all about space. Over the next month or so everything will be migrating back inside for the winter. Between growth spurts and new acquisitions, it is tight in the grow room every Fall. So I go through the dance of what should go and what should stay. As more flowers opened this plant continued to grow on me. Making the decision to keep more challenging.

@richgarrison what made you give away the other two vs seeing another blooming cycle through? The dorsal is giving me pause but nothing i cannot get over. I don't feel like I have enough longevity with multi-florals to make a guess on whether it will improve with maturity and culture upgrades. Like @Ozpaph noted in my Golden Palace post, hydration could be an issue. The second half of the summer was pretty dry. Unfortunately it is looking like the first half of the fall is going to make up for that by being wet. Ugh!
