Paphiopedilum spicerianum: An Odyssey

Well, it’s finally here. A true spicerianum from the breeding line of PaphParadise from confirmed spicerianum parents of St. Alban’s lineage. So cute too!

DS 5 cm width

First flowering since getting them 2 years ago.

How long has the flower been opened? Was it bred to have a flatter dorsal or has it just not curled yet?

This is a lovely flower ! I like these greenish P. spiceriaums a lot.

It’s opened for about 3 days now, so maybe still needs time to curl that dorsal. Takes up to a week. Both parents do not have flat dorsals.

My bi-floral spicerianum ('Candor' HCC/AOS x 'Anna') is comparible in size to yours (measuring the primary flower) but has the typical reflexed dorsal. The petal width of yours seems wider and more appealing. What is the petal width, please?

Today’s measurements:

NS 7 cm
Petals: 1.5 x 4.0 cm
Dorsal sepal: 5.2 cm wide x 3.5 cm tall (it has curled and formed a top hat lol)

Today it has stretched to almost 8 cm, within award category. Dorsal width 5.5 x 3.8 cm and petals 4.2 x 2.1 cm.

Might send to January judging with buddy as I’ll be in Brazil on an orchid expedition in the Amazon!
