No idea, but if they eat other bugs, they're probably no threat to plants. :)

Well, the first one is a assassin bug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduviidae
Not harmful for plants but for other insects.

The second one with wings is also a bug, but I don´t know what it will eat, insects or plant juice.

The last one is a weevil: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curculionidae
They eat plants.

I don´t think your friend should kill them ... only if there are too much of them. That´s nature.

Thank you Ricky!!!!

Eric, good suggestion, but maybe valenzino is right...;);););)

First four are Asassin Bugs. The first two are the nymphal stage, second two are adults. Last is a Weevil, which are chewing beetles. I don't know if there are an wevils taht are specifically harmful to orchids that are native to our latitudes.

I like and trust assasin bugs, but I would not rely on this one killing the weevil... I would take that job myself! :)

Ramon, it is amazing that what you said the way you said it, is greatly combined with the emoticons of your signature...hehehehehehe:D:D:D:D:D

Brian thank you very much for the id...!!!

Asassin bugs spread Chagas disease to humans.

They bite you while you sleep.

this is not 100% true! The assasin bug shown here is insectivorous... Chagas is transmitted by Blood-sucking bugs, and not by all of them!

Is anything 100% true?
not 100% :poke:
however, an statement like the previous one is like saying "All dogs transmit rabies".. therefore, it is not a matter of having an absolute fact, but a matter of having a twisted fact ;)

Uh-OH now you added more info to twist.....
If my previous statement is like like saying "All dogs transmit rabies" and it is fact that all dogs can transmit rabies, then we could assume that all asassin bugs can transmit Chagas? :poke:

Haven't you ever been bitten by an insectivorous insect? ;)

well, let's put it this way.. I grew up in a zone where Chagas was endemic :) and we had lots of bugs of any king around the house in South America ;) lots of assasin bugs too, and no one in my family have ever had Chagas yet (I hope this does not change!)

I was tested for Chagas about 6 months ago because I developed similar symptoms after living in the Amazon. I never heard of the disease while living there but now know more about it. The disease often lays dormant in the body for up to 40 years and then the symptoms show up to late for treatment.
I have been bitten by Asissan bugs and they hurt... allot. But I guess the ones that infect you bite at night and you don't feel it.

Don't worry those Asissans in the picture are nice bugs, they probably did not choose their own name. :)

Actually, those can bite also during the day, and you can get infected also by killing them with your hand... I used to work with Chagas during one semester while studying Biology in Venezuela... most people don't even know how to get infected and do not even recognize the real bugs... we started a campaign to educate people and were surprised when they started to bring stink-bugs to our lab for analysis.... ;)
