Phrag. Barbara LeAnn 'Deep Coral' -Huge Flower-

Well, this will be the last picture I will be posting today! When I was putting away some plants I noticed this guy in the greenhouse (How couldn't I??), so I had to share it with you guys. It is the largest Phrag. Barbara LeAnn I have ever seen! Each year the flower has gotten bigger on this plant. This is another triploid (3N) made with besseae 'Rob's Choice'. The flower is 8.8 cm across, with 3.1 cm wide petals. I checked Wild Cat, and the largest awarded Barbara LeAnn was 8.1 cm across with 2 cm wide petals. As a comparison I took a picture of it next to a regular (2n) Barbara LeAnn. Notice that the flower of the 3n plant is more red (or coral) in color compared to the 2n plant, which is more pink in color. This is due to the extra dose of Phrag. besseae.

Very nice flower, good form and colourful, Rob’s choice is giving very different results than expecting with what I have seen with besseae yet... I’m always surprise to see them...

I have lots of goals when I do my breeding. With the besseae type hybrids I would say "Round" is one of the things I am breeding for. When you use 'Rob's Choice" the offspring tends to be more round, as 'Rob's Choice' has very wide petals.

This does not mean that all my Phrag hybrids will have that "round" look. The red part is just because I used Rob's Choice which gave it an extra dose of besseae and thus the flower became more red. When it comes to colors I am trying to create a whole spectrum of colors ranging from white, yellow, peach, coral, orange, red, to pink. And with Phrag kovachii hopefully we can create some "purple" hues.

I'd also like to note that the 3N Barbara LeAnn is on its 3rd growth, and the weather here is nice and cool right now. The combination of large leaves and cool weather brought out the full potential in this hybrid. This goes the same for pretty much any besseae hybrid. You'll never really know the full flower potential until you have a lot of foliage to produce lots of energy.

Now if only we had a 4N schlimii... Robert, get to work on that!
