Phrag besseae from Ecuagenera in South Africa

Hello,

I got the below plant from Ecuagenera last year. It was in low spike but it aborted so this isn't its first try at blooming. The weather has been a bit bipolar here (hot/cold, hot/cold...) so I was worried I was going to get some hideous monster. For the price of $25 I can't be very disappointed. The shape is OK and it think most due to bad weather than genetics. The color is far from perfect, being more orange than red and the colour breaks on the pouch are not very nice. I hope the flowers get better. There is another on the way.

Will post again when the other flower opens.

It's only a first flower. It usually gets better the next time. Here, we're still getting snow with a little more on the way, but next week looks much warmer.

Damn. The show was last weekend... Next year it will be in May so maybe I will be lucky next year with the weather and shape.

Good! I'm glad to hear you're holding on to it, I really think with maturity it will improve. With all the different type/lines of bess I really think the shape is decent, now if one wants a modern, OZ type then this one may not be for you. You said you've had hot/cold, hot/cold so weather can certainly contribute to the color breaks.

Yay besseae. For a non-ploidy exploited plant its nice. BTW the pouch doen't look to have color breaks.

I agree - I like it - it looks more like some of the older besseaes, which were/are lovely in their own way.

Sad to say I have heard of similar experiences from them with promises of good form and colour that do not meet expectation

Unless I was a breeder or hitting the shows, then I wouldnt not grubble though

Yes! I'm asgree too, it is very special and the staminode coloration is just stunning. I like the way the red stripes on the pouch are something else too...
