Tom I think that the explanation of the staminode issues in fischerii is quite easy... I can answer it with another question ;) Does anyone know how many fischerii plants have been found in the wild?

Yes excessive inbreeding is one option, but in general I see more than one example of self polinating /lack of staminode in the whole genus.

I would not be suprised if lack of staminode and self polinating tendency is a natural adaptation of rare plant species. (Wild inbreeding depression??)

I have a paper on P exstaminodium (and seen it in my own plant) that staminodes can be present/absent/partial on the same plant but diffent flowers on a single spike.

I think lindenii is also flaky when it comes to staminode quality.

What may trigger this is another question. I've also had fisheri blooms (usually the first on the spike) with no staminode, but successive blooms with good staminodes.

But the rest of the flower looks pretty good.
