Well this one is absolutely not from the US breeding program, it is a plant from the Eric Young anyway, so it can be a sure 3n or 4n. Eric Young kept only Mem. Dick Clements that were 4n, counted by Don Wimber, but we don't know if the besseae used was the 2n or 4n plant.

Apart from some plants at Orchids Limited, and EYOF at the time of Donald Wimber, no pro grower or breeder in paphs or phrags EVER counted chromosome of their plants, they just put a figure because the plant is bigger or whatever.

No way ... Chuck sold the plant, but he most certainly did not do any chromosome counting. ASk him to put the karyogram on the forum ... see what he says.

At what time counted grower or breeder chromosome of their plants ?. Are grower and breeder Scientist or pensioners ?

Is this being fair dragging Chuck in? Is chromosome count a presumption on Hakone's part? .. or was he contacted to verify that? Matt Gore lists him as breeder, that's all.

No, we have an orchid specific problem... Lilium breeders, quite a rhododendron breeders do count their chromosome ( and I do so, but it is painful, long, boring to do correctly). Apart from the EYOF who counted before ALL their motherplants, none is doing this for all their breeding stock. That's a pity, because the ploidy level is really important.

That last Karyogram, which I saw, is before 28 years. I am now hobby breeder. I am neither grower , breeder still Scientist.

I believe, what grower, breeder says :D

Yes, Xavier, but in a way you confirm that no.one really knows whether that plant is 4n or not.
